What do you mean Old Age!!!!

El Bandito

Recommended Posts

Now - you may see a portly ageing rocket surgeon in a skirt - but in my mind's eye I am the lithe athlete, full of vim and vigour.

Of late - I have found myself squinting a little at my computer/ipad screen - and complaining that writing is getting smaller in the newspaper.

So - I booked an eye test.

Blimey - those things have come a long way! All sorts of funky things going on...(must blog about that) - but to cut a long story short - I need to wear glasses for reading or computer work (i.e. every waking minute!)

"Why?" I wailed

"Simply old age Sir" responded my kindly optician, a Sikh gentleman called Singh.

As he got up from the floor straightening out his turban, he suggested that I might want to ice my knuckles - oh and perhaps have a look at some of the spectacles out front.

I apologised - suggested that he might want to reset his nose and work on his diplomacy and tact.

43!!

Old Age? Honestly! Seems a little previous to me...

Still - I have decided to embrace the change.

Option 1: Round frameless. Harry Potter and Hagrids Love child.

Option 2: Stylish Italian Fashion Guru. Fat designer, with lecherous tendencies (needs to be teamed with hair gel and designer kilts)

Option 3: A monocle. Further develop my inner Colonel Blimp

Option 4: A vintage Pince Nez. Herr Sehrupmyownassenschnitzel

Option 5: Nip down to Walmart and pick up a pair for 50 cents

Decisions decisions.....

Is that Colonel Blimp or colonel Klink ..... Hogan!! Mmmm - another sherry mayhaps ??

Or is a stout man in a skirt called Colonel Blimp in the motherland ??

Colonel Blimp is a kind of amalgam for me...

.Florid face, whiskey nose, big tum and booming voice -"HALLO! MY NAME IS BINKY - and so is my wife, WHAT?"

This is what I did... Go online searching for celebs with glasses that have a similar shaped face.

Pick a style that you like.

Check for vouchers online for buy one get one free frames etc

Go back to the optician and try on lots of glasses, take a straight woman or a gay man with you to confirm shagability.

Don't scrimp. Seriously, good frames last for years and you can always change the lenses if you scratch them or need to 'upgrade'

Buy two pairs. Buy the anti glare coating and buy the scratch resistant coating. The cost is minimal for the savings they actually make.

I've worn glasses since 17 so can't comment on the age thing, but no, 43 is not old age, stoopid man.  "imagine there, there conversation).

Glasses, I think the oversized jobbies look ridiculous on everyone (how many people have I just offended lol), so go for something classic looking and stylish.  Robs idea of looking for celebs who wear them with a similar face shape to yours is sterling, try that.

I'm 40... Been wearing glasses since I was 11... Only recently did I actually start wearing 'statement' glasses rather than ones that look invisible and I think it was the right decision. They're not silly oversized rims though, I'd have to be 18 and wearing skinny jeans hanging around my arse and carrying a skateboard and iPad sporting a highly styled asymmetrical fringe... and frankly... That's too much like hard work!

Nice. Looking good.

Currently in the frame are some Paul Smith frames that looked good yesterday. Then some Prada of a similar style today (both with female sign off!)

Going to do some more research.

I got glasses a year ago...oh well the age thing, guess with 50 you just have to have it sighhh. I ordered two pairs..totally different. Love the rimless glasses!

2 pairs was smart...this way I have only one pair helping me to find my glasses :-)

Lo and behold, I got the old age remark from a dr. that looked like she was 20, if that damn old, so don't feel bad El Band.  For me, I hit Costco and got what was reasonable and fit my big head.

Good luck in your search, but don't feel alone, I'm only 46 or 47.  Can't remember right off the top of my head

Oh and I had to edit this so I could tell you... I have Bi-focal glasses now too!!!  Thank goodness only need em to see the computer screen and the books I read!

Bandito - By my mid 40's I needed a boost to read.  I have cheap 1.25 magnification glasses for computer, reading and detail work. This last year I seem to need them more and more and I take them on and off a lot so I'm going for heavy black plastic frames and a stupid string to hang them around my neck when I'm digging post holes or feeding the pigs etc. I could care less about "fashion" - somebody stupid enough to call me a nerd gonna hafta call 911.
