The Irony of Smoking

During the early days of my quit, there were moments when a switch was flipped and the process of quitting started making more sense.  Reading the following passage written by Allen Carr was one of those pivotal moments...

"The only reason you or any other smoker needs or wants a cigarette is to try to get rid of the feeling of nicotine withdrawal.  But it is only smokers who suffer from nicotine withdrawal.  Non-smokers do not.  So all you are trying to do whenever you light a cigarette is feel like a non-smoker!"

It seems obvious now, but at the time that reversal of thinking felt revolutionary.

Irony - started smoking cuz everyone else was; if you didn't smoke you weren't part of the crowd. Then, in the end, everybody is in the nice warm building and you're shivering outside with the handful of pariahs that still smoke.

Make sure that at least a couple times this winter you drive by a huddled group standing in shit weather, point, laugh, and holler hahaha I quit smoking!

And perhaps the ultimate irony of smoking: I started smoking cigarettes in part to show what an independent man I was and ended up becoming a slave to the damn things.

Spent a heap load of money..in hair salons...just to walk out the door ..and stink it up..

Spends heaps on clothes..just to light up ..and stink them up...sometimes even burn them..

Oodles of money on perfume..thinking I smell nice...wrong..I stank of smoke ..no matter how much I used...

Me thinking ...no one could smell it..numpty....

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
