He's just coming up to the age I took my first puff..

So...I thought a would give him the never smoke speech and why...

He always loved sport ,when he was only two..I was told i was messi and where to stand..

His grandad has always been too sick to have a kick about ..so I took over..

He's also a great rugby player ..every day he plays on a field whether football or rugby..

I explained smoking in detail..what happens to your body ..why grandad carnt play.

I'm hoping a did enough to always say no if offered..

He walked over and hugged his grandad and promised he would never smoke..

Fortunately, young people in Great Britain and America are far less likely to smoke that first one than the generations that came before.  The societal views of smoking have changed dramatically.  The tobacco industry's smoke and mirrors have been replaced with the harsh light of truth concerning the realities of smoking.

Doreen, I feel confident that your sporty grandson will not fall into the same trap we did.

Good for you!  It just breaks my heart when I see young kids smoking...they just don't know what they are setting themselves up for...

Hopefully that should be enough, I agree with Boo, that things are very different now with kids and smoking. It does still happen. But e-cigarettes are more appealing for the youngsters these days.

And that is so scary!

And I was secretly hoping to read about the other "S" word talk!!

Aww noooo I will leave that one for dad...

He lives in a smoke free healthy home..his dad ( my baby )..is up at 5 every morning to have time in the gym ,before the school run..

I did mention the E cig...

When I look at him though ..he's a kid...it did make me wonder what the hell I must have looked like ..standing there with a fag hanging out of my mouth ..thinking I looked cool and grown up...

What a poignant story, Doreen.

The Lad promising to Granddad...very powerful.

He has seen so much and lived with the horrors of smoking.

I pray it is impossible for him to smoke, just impossible.

I am glad you spoke with him and keep speaking with him about important matters.

You are his valuable ally, he is a lucky young man.

I must admit when I wrote about young people today and smoking, I totally forgot about e-cigs.  Sleek new delivery system, same old poison.

That being said, I still have great confidence that Doreen's grandson will steer clear of nicotine.  The young fella has great mentor to keep him on the right track.

I was 12 when I first put a cigarette in my mouth. Seems so young to me now, was also the age I first drank alcohol. Awful.

I really really hope, smoking (and ecigs etc) become 'uncool'/unappealing to kids - it's the only way it will end.
