Something To Do

Not only will exercise increase your odds of living longer, you will begin reaping immediate benefits.  Since quitting smoking and taking up daily exercise, I feel remarkably better than I did three months ago.

If someone is reading this who is contemplating taking up exercise, please know this: you don't have to kill yourself in the gym six-days a week to feel the benefits.  Even just walking around more yields benefits that will improve your life.  If you are just starting out, don't hesitate to be a beginner.

Oh a 100/percent agree...

I found a gentle qi gong....this is amazing if you find excersizing hard....

Just what I needed for my old bones...

I feel better now than I did 20 years ago....

Find something that suits you....even a gentle swim....

Actually even a simple walk can do wonders.

I personally love riding bicycle. I put on audio book and drive...and swimming. But in fairness just being outside has great effect on the mood :)

Boo is completely right. The most important thing is to find something you enjoy and you won't have to make yourself to do it - you will look forward to doing it.

The three days a week I do strength training are the only days I don't exercise outside when the weather permits.  The combination of the great outdoors and exercise are beneficial on so many levels.  I typically enjoy my time outside so much I lose track of time and forget that I am "exercising."

I'm banging on the same point here, but...over the last couple of days I have been reading about something that is potentially a game-changer in how we view fitness.  NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis).  As researchers study this concept and evaluate the biofeedback it is becoming more clear that increased activity throughout the day is more important than a structured and timed workout.  This is not to say that working out will not provide great benefits, but living more actively and partaking in more "non-exercise" activities is vital to a healthy lifestyle.

For people looking to lose fat, maintain a healthy weight, improve longevity and mobility, and feel more energetic, people who increased their daily NEAT output saw better results than those who worked out for an hour but were relatively sedentary throughout the rest of the day.

There are more scientific articles available online, but this one provides a good overview of NEAT...

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
