So was at the beach today with my youngest and a wee friend of his, there is a lovey big park there and the kids were having a ball, me and my OH decided to have a wee seat , coffee and a nice empire biscuit just as I was about to take a bite, on either side of us people lit cigarettes, OMG the smell, and the taste, needless to say loud as you like I started going on about people who smoke, it was disgusting, on and on I went, until my OH very quietly in my ear said "you were once that smoker" ................................oppps....................sorry to all the people where ever I went out who received my second hand smoke, sorry for spoiling your lovely clean air with my nasty nicotine riddled smoke, sorry if your children passed by me whilst I was blowing the smoke out into their path, sorry if you were trying to eat your lovingly prepared picnic only to open your mouth to take a bite of your sandwich and instead receive my smoke, what a selfish smoker I used to be.

I too have recently become aware of how selfish and self-centered I was while smoking.

No concern for others and I would turn my nose up at people who complained.

only with hindsight you both came to this  way of thinking, julie i wouldnt  say you was self centered as really you was not aware at the time you was inflicting anything on anyone, same goes for you jackie.

Oh god, the endless times I smoked around people... I feel so ashamed now! I can't stand when people light up around me now, especially while I'm eating. My dad and little brother do this every time I visit and I get so annoyed with them, but then I realize I used to do this with my friends, family, even strangers.

I can not stand the smell of cigarette smoke amymore.

Anytime I go in to a house where people smoke, it hits me like a brick at the door.

Like you said, you can smell it outside just by walking by a group of people smoking

So glad we do not smell like that anymore!

I had to laugh Jackie. I've been both of these.  The smoker who was like, oh for gods sake I'm outside! The reformed smoker who moves away whilst thinking wow, that stinks! I'm sorry your picnic was tainted though, that's rubbish. Isn't the weather amazing for april here though!

Although you have every right to preach your views to them, I don't think you should. They have every right to smoke there annoying that it is. Equally people are allowed to play Miley Cyrus out of a telephone, swear in non-creative ways, spit and litter.

Now I accept second hand smoke has more health issues than the horror that is Miley Cyrus, but it's outside, it's no worse than walking down a busy road, and I'm guessing you don't shout at cars telling them off.

Chill out, they'll come to their senses eventually... or die. Either way, it solves the problem.

We do our beach vacation every year. I used to go to the very top of the dunes to have my smoke. It really sucked walking through all that hot sand in the 90 degree temp just to get my fix- but I'd do it. Now I continue to play with my children on the blanket while rubbing lotion on my wife.

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
