Hi everyone. My mum died on Tuesday from lung cancer (although it spread pretty much everywhere).

I've been an on/off smoker for 16 years but it's got really bad in the last 7 months whilst my mum was fighting this illness.

She would have been horrified to know that I'm a smoker. I absolutely have to quit, not just for me, but for her. But I'm grieving and I know it's going to be hard.

I'm going to do it though! Tomorrow is the day

Welcome Cookie36!

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.  Many of us here have lost our parent to cancer.

Read read read and watch the videos.  The stickies have a wealth of good information and shared experiences.  More information will give you more tools to use to overcome this addiction.  Please keep in mind that the thought of quitting holds way too much power, more than is warranted.  Just stay close to the Quit Train, post your questions, concerns, we have an SOS thread if it gets really bad....just know you have a team of folks willing to support you through the BEST decision you will have made for your health.

Remember....Smoking is NOT an option.  NOPE - Not One Puff EVER.

Hi and welcome cookie..

My sincere condolences on the sad loss of your mum.....

You CAN do this....you just need the desire bad enough...

I smoked 5 decades and I did it....

Read all you can about this addiction...it will be your biggest tool....

Try reading Allen Carr ..the easy way...this book has helped millions...I think you can down load it for free...

We have a slogan...smoking is not on the table ...ever....this helped me so much ...

Stay close to the board...

Do a daily pledge.....

You can do it....if I did....you can....

Your kids know you smoke.

Your mom did too.

Smokers think they got everyone fooled, when really the stink gives them away and everyone just doesn't say anything about it.

SO....

I love cookies. I could be the cookie monster....

Just quit now and be one of us that minute. NOPE and "A puff away from a pack a day." were my two sayings. Said NOPE about 15,000 times the first week. Just muttered it the entire time I was awake. ANd I made it.

Hey Cookie. I'm a newbie. I quit 4 weeks (and 2 days) ago. Best thing I ever ever did. I was like you. So afraid I couldn't do it. So convinced I couldn't do it. I admit to using an app which totally changed my outlook on smoking but having come here I realise the app does the same as Allan CARR's book and the same as these forums. However you do it, just grasp that smoking is not your friend. Read, read, read as others have said and post post post.

There's so much I want to share with you that I have learned already but I won't overload too quickly. I'm so sorry you've lost your mum and for all you've been through. Make yourself proud. X

Hi Cookie,

You have to quit but more important is that you WANT to quit!

Wanting to quit will give you that extra strength you will need.

It won't be easy but reading and posting here and with us behind you, you will quit.

Congratulations on your new way of life!

Thanks so much for the support!!

So far so good...4pm here and no cigarettes all day...although huge pangs of jealousy when driving past pubs and seeing people smoking outside...although what am I jealous of really?! Them being freezing and miserable like I used to be?! :)

Trust that one day soon, you will have zero jealously, an honest relief and you'll feel genuine pride that you're not one of them.

Hi cookie, very sorry for your loss but good for you making the best decision you'll ever make. I think you're heading into day 3 now, and it can be a beast sometimes - make sure to have fruit juices and snacks around as your blood sugar can get a bit wonky and make you crave, and be gentle with yourself. Read and post as much as you can, it really helps.

Welcome to the board.

A couple of my crave fighters were shelled peanuts and chips and hot salsa.

Kept my hand and my mouth busy and while not particularly healthy - there are worse things one could eat. :)

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
