I think if you smoked with them they wont feel bad about smoking themselves, when we quit, it just makes them realise it can be done and they are ashamed that they have not, they need a partner in crime!

You hit the nail on the head Tracey, they feel they are justified in smoking because others are smoking too, its how the addiction works, when other smokers see us quit and see us succeeding, unfortunately deep down they want us to fail and go back to being in their "gang" makes it easier you see, oh so and so smokes, i'm just nipping out to join her/him for one, just to be social you know what I mean!!xx

Absolutely. I don't think they even realize it makes them feel like they shouldn't do it...but if they drag you back into their gang it justifies their addiction and reinforces the junkie thinking of it's impossible to give up....  Keep saying no thanks, I love being smoke free!! A) it freaks em out and B) you may just start them thinking like only a quit friend can. xx

agree with all of the above.

when I was a smoker and one of my family members or friends quit.....I wouldn't go as far as offer them a smoke because I really wanted to see them succeed...but...I was a little envious that they could do it and I  "couldn't".  Their quitting also reminded me that "another one was gone"  meaning...a smoking buddy...i was afraid I would be the only one standing outside, looking like a fool, smoking.

Joel said somewhere (this video?) if someone keeps offering you a smoke you should take it and break it. I don't agree. I think walking away would be better. Or, if you need to get tough just inform the person that they are harassing you and they need to stop. In another instance someone threw a pitcher of water on someone who kept offering a smoke. Well, this is actually assault. It's just crazy. Quitting smoking doesn't give someone license to act in any manner they wish. These are not good ways to guard the quit.

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
