Remember being a smoker, and someone walking by you

spontaneously putting a finger or hand up to their nose?

Many years ago I was on a boat watching a gorgeous sunset.

I was in the middle of a crowd, and lit up a smoke.

From somewhere in the crowd a gruff voice said very loudly,

"Oh yeah, can't enjoy a beautiful sunset without lighting up

your cigarette, ruining this moment for everyone around you."

I was so ashamed! Did I put out my smoke? I really can't remember

but I probably didn't.

The irony is...I hated the smell of smoke myself.  It was just something

I put up with because I was addicted.

For every person who enjoys the smell of a cigarette, there are hundreds

who hate it, and who feel sick at the smell.

Addiction is always about being selfish. It's all about me, me, me...what I like, what

brings me comfort, my trials, my tribulations, the hardships in my life,

my rights...my brand of insanity...and to hell with everyone else.

I know a homeless person in my neighborhood who flies a sign that says:

"Homeless veteran dying of lung cancer..."

He's not a veteran.

He's a chain smoker.

He doesn't have lung cancer...yet.

He chain smokes while flying this sign!

I once asked him, "Do people really give you money when you fly that sign?"

He answered, "Hell yeah. I smoke the best

most expensive cigarettes

with what I get on this sign. It's the best con ever.

I even blow smoke right into people's faces."

(Nobody likes this guy, especially the other people

out there on the corner. They hate him and his attitude.)

Smoking is stinky and selfish. Not that this was my main reason for

quitting.

Just saying...

I totally agree smokers are self absorbed we don`t see this though until we are the other side of the fence, I am sure smokers would complain if all non smokers started spraying chemicals in the air for them to breath, addiction wears blinkers :(

as for the man you speak of, karma will do her work there I feel

I agree. I put my hands up too, I was "that" smoker. Outside the school gates getting my last puffs in...today walking past the caretaker, and my 9 year old says, I hate that smell from 10 feet away!

It is a terrible smell and it absolutely ruins things. So i hear you, good points!

Wow, that guy with the sign...some people hey!

I'm not a down-on-the-homeless.  He just happens to be homeless.

I AM down on fake veterans. (My brother's a veteran...)

The point is, I'm just trying to get a recollection

of my mental state as a smoker so I don't forget.

That "just one" or "just 2 or 3" is not only about smoking...

it's about going back to a place of mental and emotional darkness.

I've never known a dog, or a cat, or a child, or a plant that

likes the smell of smoking, or a smoker's touch.

It's so anti-life.

My addict's brain is still alive (I mean, I am one month new) -- but

I hate that addict. I need to keep stomping out its evil little existence.

Wow, am honored to hear from Marti...5 day smelling oh-so-sweet Marti!  YAY!!!!!

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
