Last evening I began reading Allen Carr's book about how to quit smoking.  I'm well into the book and the entire time I was reading it I got the impression that his thoughts are the only way to quit is to go cold turkey.  I am using the nicotine patch.  This instilled self-doubt, and as a result here I am up at 4 a.m. wishing for a pack of cigarettes to smoke.  I wish I never began reading that book. I know I shouldn't cast blame but it just seems odd to me that the day I begin reading it this happened.  I think I pill put down the Kindle and forget about the rest of the book and go it my way.

Hey Brenndy - you need to do what is right for you :-). Just because others found him helpful doesn't mean it will work for you ( I never really liked his book either) ... So keep with the patches and walk away from the kindle and I am sure you will do fine :-)

I agree with Pippa do it your way.

I completely understand the book works for many, but not all.

If the patch was/is nothing but a placebo who cares, if you believe it's working and stops you purchasing cigs then it's working.

I know lots of people with both cold turkey quits and NRT quits who have successful solid quits... Do whatever suits you.

Hope you get a better sleep tonight.

You are on day 5 of not smoking and are using nrt so you are in a state of withdrawl, cravings will be happening and you will be out of whack for a while whilst your body is adjusting to not having all those chemicals and a lower dose of nicotine flowing into it

Your quit is yours and all roads lead to rome eventually

You are doing just fine, stick to nope and it will get easier

do you understand the principles of the book though as in, how addictive nicotine is and that makes us addicts?

I say go it your way as well - I didn't read any books etc.. I got involved on the board - there is plenty of inspiration here as well - NOPE pledge is a great start and just being aware and following the milestones can be good enough - I feel like I have been here much longer then I have and I mean that in a positive way - I know my quit would never have been this easy without the people here - so put down the book and go back to NOPE your way.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

Only you know what is best for you.  Don't believe the hype...

Just quit... no mater how you get there...just get there.

Keep on keepin on.

Hey Brenndy,

Sorry you had a crap nights sleep, but I agree with you, and with everyone else who has posted - if the book is not working for you, then stop reading it - there is no right or wrong way to quit! Seems to me you were doing just great without the book, so you just need to carry on. And you really are doing great :)

ETA - I never read that book either ;)

All quits are good quits!!

The book made me want to smoke too (read after I'd quit), I put it down, actually gave it away to smoker who is still smoking. Works for some, not all.

Your quit is a great quit. It's ok to wobble, just don't fall :)

Hi Brenndy. Hope you're doing well and feeling positive today! I'm in the habit of listening to the hypnotic audio track by Pail McKenna before I go to sleep. Apparently I'm supposed to listen to it for 14 days after I quit. Not sure how effective that is but the underlying message in it is more about feeling positive and proud of yourself... Certainly puts me to sleep after a while haha.

I've had great days and terrible days, but what feels best is that I'm still not smoking. Best of luck!

PS. The people on this board who take the time to offer advice even after a huge quits are nothing short of amazing!

I already knew the latter prior to reading the book. Thanks for your input. Greatly appreciate everyone taking time to chime in and provide their thoughts and opinions.  PS: i STILL HATE THE BOOK and nothing will change that.  Besides what I already wrote; he is contradictoroy by telling you it is okay to smoke while reading, and he is repetitive to just fill up the pages.  DEFINITELY not for me.

Please respect that while it is not for you, it has helped many people.

I quit using the gum, but also clung to Allen Carr's book like a lifeline.

Let me tell you, having lived thru it, don't waste time feeling guilty about believing in his ideology and not being cold turkey. I felt guilty for a very long time about that, and for no good reason. The quit is what is important.

Hey Brenndy.

You were awake all night because you are a nicotine addict. The book gave your inner junkie hope....

You resisted it.

Good work

Along with everyone else I agree. If it's not for you, it's not for you. There are people here who have quit with NRT, CT, Champix...all sorts of ways. You stick with what works for you.

Absolutely NAILED it.

(I've lurked here forever, and the aptness of this observation compelled me to decloak. Well played!)

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
