good morning.
I appreciate the existence of your site and plan to use it pretty heavily within the next few weeks.
I quit sunday night. so this is day three.
weight gain is my biggest fear, so I've gone wheat-free and sugar-free. I do the n.y city ballet workout for 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening.
any other suggestions? I do plenty of water, green vegetables and fresh fruit.

again, thanks.

Welcome Smarty :)  Congrats on quitting!  I always it's easier to lose fat cells than cancer cells.  There is lots to read here, both factual and anecdotal.  Sometimes you might just need to be distracted, lots to do in the socializing forum too.  I highly recommend taking the NOPE Pledge every morning.   Please feel free to reach out to anyone here if you need help.

I kept a cup of carrot sticks on my desk. It annoyed the hell out of people around me but I found they were good when you got a craving

Welcome to a great place and a nicotine-free life! :)

I use 100% licorice lozenges from the pharmacy. They're not candy, they truly are just the boiled down extract from licorice root. You have to be a hard-core licorice lover to like them. Bonus: no sugar, starch or anything.

Deep breathing is great, too. I'm on day 13 today, and I love the way my breathing has gradually improved (I honestly didn't think there was anything the matter with it while I was smoking, but I was obviously deluding myself). Today, without effort, I feel as if each breath I take pulls air all the way into my lower abdomen. Pretty awesome!

Hello, and welcome!

Congratulations on your quit!

Sounds like you have a great plan in place, so good for you. You will need some extra sugars for a while, and a lot of us drank fruit juice to help with this :)

I use a lot of mint gum against protest from my stomach when it wants to eat 12 sandwiches a day - it works

I used to suck on licorice roots back when I worked as an herbalist. it turned me off licorice for good! I use some detox herbs and I love detox baths.

I stayed home from work today and I've done about 10 minutes of my workout so far. I feel like  a perpetual motion machine. maybe I've become an exercise addict.

+1   I too have found success with the mint gum (has to be mint).

Welcome Smarty Pants and congrats on one of the best decisions you can make.

Sounds as though  you already eat pretty healthy.  I would say let's worry about quitting smoking first and them maybe down the road you can work on weight control...but I think that ship has sailed already.  Just be aware of your sugar intake.  You will be fine.

Get busy and stay busy... the payoff pitch from this quit smoking thing is spectacular and well worth the sh ittiness of the quit.  Embrace...

and keep on keepin on!!!

Welcome Aboard.

Congratulations on quitting. Just keep moving. Workout, walk, jump up and down...just don't smoke. Beat that - and weight will not be a problem.

devil doll: no. that's 2004 ky derby winner smarty jones. I wish he were mine! i'd love to just see him at least once.

thanks for everyone's ideas and feedback. i'm kind of obsessive about weight. i'm really afraid of gaining and i'm actually hoping to lose some. i'd always have a cigarette after eating. so I find that i'm eating less to avoid that craving. but I still have to restrict calories and move constantly.

good morning, everyone.

so far, so good. except that I can't sleep. but I keep working out and restricting calories.

we have a winter storm headed our way. again. so i'll be stuck indoors. which is ok. I have two articles to work on and I plan to get some jigsaw puzzles. I think they'll help keep me occupied when I take a break from writing.

thanks for everyone's support!

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
