In fact, my answer could look like I lied, because I did buy a bluray this morning (online)... But it wasn't in the sale, and I would have bought it regardless if it were Black Friday or Blue Wednesday... So I like to think that I didn't add to the madness!

I'm going through a frugality kick just now. After a careful analysis, I discovered that many things I routinely purchase are 10% less expensive at my local Target store than at my regular grocery store (For those who don't know, Target is a national discount store.) So I am now purchasing cat food, paper plates, dish soap, etc-- things I call "paper products and sundries" at Target.

 

Today being Black Friday, I discovered that I can purchase (online) a Target gift card for 10% off. So I bought a big gift card for myself to use when I purchase my paper products and sundries.  :) Poof! I'm saving about 20% off a lot of my standard purchase items. I feel clever and frugal and I didn't even have to wade through the crowds to do it!

Yes, the grocery store was lovely, and I was able to circle around the madness of Best Buy, BB&B, etc.

However, I did a little online shopping for me, since you all said how important it was to reward my quit ☺️

Gemzee, in the States Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday and most people have the next day (Friday) off of work. Many of them like to spend the day getting started on their Christmas shopping. Therefore, many stores advertise big sales for the Friday after Thanksgiving. If the sales are big enough (like 25% off) and/or the sale items are popular enough (like flat-screen TVs) then a lot of people think it is fun to line up outside of the store before opening time so they can all rush in when the doors are unlocked and grab what they want before the item is all sold out. Somehow, the Friday after Thanksgiving got named Black Friday. (By the way, there are a lot of Black Fridays in our history named for a number of historical events. The term Black Friday did not originate with Christmas shopping.)

 

In recent years, with the increase in popularity of online shopping the Monday after Thanksgiving is often a big sale day for online retailers. I think the thinking is that a lot of people will spend some time at work on Monday using their company's computer to do online shopping. This day is often referred to as Blue Monday (I don't know why "blue" instead of "black").

No need to be confused Gem...It started in the states..with the Friday after Thanksgiving being the biggest shopping day of the year (because most of us have Thursday AND Friday off work)  that is the day that (if sales are down)a lot of retailers end up in the RED...or if things go well (and sales are up)...they end up in the BLACK!!.....BLACK FRIDAY..    To try and get more and more shoppers into their stores, retailers  (heavily) discount a couple "key" items....and another factor is they must open before the competition so year after year stores would open at ridiculous hours  4am..then 3am...and its to the point now, they remain open all night and have something different on sale every hour...Its madness!

 from a non-shopping male perspective...I think that because of it, our Thanksgiving is a thing of the past...all that Thursday is now, is the day that you get ready to go out and spend all night shopping....literally...some of my relation has "scaled" down Thanksgiving so that they can get a little nap and be prepared for the nights adventure..

 

the saving may be good...but for me, not THAT good...i will sit at home and at my leisure, buy a few things when-ever  I think about it..on other days..when me and my wife happen to have the same day off..we will go out to a mall and do some shopping for our granddaughters...all in all...i get everything bought that we planned on, and in reality i dont think  anyone saved  enough more than I did to warrant that kind of craziness on black Friday.

 

As much as i dislike shopping...and the whole Black Friday thing...I have to say...from the retailers point..it DOES make a difference... My youngest daughter is manager of a women's clothing store in a nice mall....and she actually looks forward to the madness!..She has been working 18 hr days  for the week leading up to BF..and will continue to work way too many hours a week up until Christmas..

 

I guess different strokes....lol...

I wanted to get the Black Friday deal without going to Target.  So, I ordered pick up at store yesterday, paid online and picked up today.  New sheets and a $25 discount.
