Hi everyone, my name is Jimmy, and I have finally gotten serious about quitting smoking...I chose my mother's birthday, October 23rd, as my stop date, so I will always remember what the date was when I quit, so I'm on day 3, so far so good...a friend of mine suggested this forum for support, and I want to do anything that will help...My doctor wanted to put me on Chantix, but I've heard bad things, so I have chosen to go the Vape route, any suggestions on flavors or brands would be appreciated, I currently use MasterMind "Snake Oil", which is a watermelon menthol flavor, I am enjoying it so far :-)

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your decision to quit.

Can't give any suggestions on the vapor flavors, but as long as you're using it like the patch or gum, it's fine.  The only way to break the nicotine addiction is to get off it completely.  I hope this is your goal.

Nicotine is nicotine is nicotine.

Welcome Jimmy :)  I have to agree with what MQ said above, use the e-cig as a step down.  To be honest, once I got through the 3 days of nicotine withdrawal it was mostly about breaking the hand to mouth habit.  That said, I know it is possible to quit with the method you are using.  We do have a member here that did successfully quit with an e-cig and then quit the e-cig as she intended to.  You will find plenty of support here, regardless of the quit method you choose.

Welcome to forum there are a couple of peeps here who have used the ecig to quit by tapering the nicotine down and setting a date for each step down and final quit.................my MIL used the ecig to quit and now she has quit both as she only used it for a month then put it down for good. Congrats on your decision to quit.

Yeah I'm using nicotine to start, but I do plan on stopping altogether...I'm on day 3 of not smoking traditionally, so I haven't thought about a tapering down point, I wasn't sure if the vape would help me at all so I guess I am in trial mode at the moment

Hi, Jimmy, and welcome to Quit Train. You have just made the smartest decision you will ever make in your life! If you've gotten through Day 3 you're already through the worst of it. Things will start to get easier from here on out.

There are 3 things that will really, really help you quit smoking permanently:

1. Write down a list of at least 3 reasons you want to quit. Make them very vivid and specific reasons. Not "I want to quit for my health." but 'I want to quit so I don't end up in a wheelchair and on oxygen by the time I'm 60." Write them down on two or three pieces of paper and keep them handy-- maybe one in your pocket, one stuck on your computer and one in your car. Whenever you  get an urge to smoke, read your list again.

2. Educate yourself about the nature of nicotine addiction and how to over come it. Nicodemon is sneaky and persistent so it's really important to understand his lies and tricks. This site has tons of information, posts, and videos about how to overcome your nicotine addiction. I suggest that you start with How Do I Quit Smoking? The Newbie Database and the very helpful Your First Days, nicotine Free . And it would be great if you kind of keep track of what strategies you use to get through the first couple of weeks so you can add to the First Days thread.

3. Stay close to the board. The more you read and post here the better your chances for long term success. Take the N.O.P.E pledge every day (Not One Puff Ever). Ask questions or ask for advice. And "pay it forward" by sharing your experiences and your tips-and-tricks with others here.

Again, congratulations on your strong start. Don't be afraid of quitting-- it will be easier than you ever expected if you educate yourself and reach out for help and support as often as you want. You can do this! Yes you can!!

Hi Jimmy, nice to meet you, and congratulations for making the decision to quit smoking!

There are some folks here who used ecigs to quit smoking, who subsequently quit ecigs, too. And all of us are nicotine addicts, so we will all be able to help you in the regard.

Look forward to watching your quit grow :)

Hi Jimmy.  Nice to meet you.  I quit smoking using an e-cig.  I began using nicotine in the e-juice, however I did do a step down with the nicotine.  I believe I began at 18 mg, and worked my way down from there.  I currently still vape, but with no nicotine.  I use different flavors, but in the beginning I stayed away from anything that has too much of a taste similar to tobacco flavors.  I pretty much used flavors like pina colada, peach, hazelnut, and caramel mochachino.  I had tried everything in the past to quit smoking and never lasted with any of them.  I did the vaping and I've been smoke free for 5 months now!  I am shocked that I could get through it, but the vaping certainly helped me to feel like I wasn't missing out on anything.

If you have any questions, or if I can be of any help in your quest to step down on the nicotine until you are nicotine free, just let me know.  I'm more than happy to share my experiences.

Good Luck!!!

Welcome Jimmy... and congrats on the best decision you can make for yourself.

First off.. you got a plan for getting off the ecig?  Stepping down...etc?  Don't get caught up in it.  My aunt still chews nicotine gum some 7-8-9 years later.  Don't get caught up... use it to ease you.. but put a plan in action.

Second.... so life is going to be hard no matter whether or not you are smoking or not.. what is your plan for when you get pissed?  Make a plan ... deep breaths... maybe a walk.  Smoking is NO LONGER AN OPTION...PERIOD...live it.

Ask...bitch... whatever you want... we have all been through it or are going through it.

Keep on keepin on.
