How old is your car?

I will try to condense this..lol..

I currently drive a 1997 jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

we bought it new...and it is now 17 years old with 210,000 miles...Ive never had no real issues with it..its got to be the most dependable car /truck I have ever owned..

It started life as the "family truckster"..it was the wifes that she used primarily to pick the girls up from practices, or to haul the family around when we all went the same direction  ;) ..

After it served that duty, and the wife got something new (in 2008)..the Jeep went to my daughter until she graduated Kent St..then Ohio St (grad studies) and she got a big girl job and bought her own car (Honda)...

The Jeep came back home (4 years ago) and I have been driving it ever since..

I have since traded in the wifes car for a new (2014) Ford Fusion..I wanted a Taurus, but couldnt justify the price tag  :(  ...

The wife keeps on me about getting something new...to be honest, I am quite happy with the old Jeep..it doesnt have any rust (hard to believe for an Ohio car)..and runs great and has never let me down..i figure it has no trade-in value, so why not run it until it doesnt run any longer...:)

We do tend to keep our cars for a long time compared to others...like I said, we still have the Jeep after 17 years, and the only reason I got rid of the wifes 2008 was it was a piece of crap...seriously...It was a Chevy Cobalt I bought for her to run around town and back and forth to work...between the recalls, and all the trips back to the dealer to fix things (thankfully I got the extended warranty)..I got rid of it as soon as i thought it was worth  trading in...it only had 40k miles..for 7 years, thats pretty low...

I plan on having this Fusion until the year 2045..whatcha think..will it out last me?

I think I have pics of both..let me see ..

Here is the Fusion right after I bought it..just before Christmas last year...

pay no attention to that mustang following me..lol..this is the only pic I have loaded that has my Jeep in it..i was using it to pull my mustang around from the back garage to the front one to work on it...some day i will have that back together and the mustang will become my daily driver  ;)

Hi, Joe-

Since I believe in the adage that a new car loses 20% of its value the minute you drive it off the showroom floor, we always buy used cars. One or two years old with less than 25,000 miles. Then we keep them until they die. Right now my husband is driving a 2003 Hyundai with 120,000 miles and I am driving a 2010 Hyundai with 67,000.

Actually, I'm thinking of breaking with tradition and trading in the 2003 for a newer model. The reason is that I do NOT want to have a car payment when we're retired 2 or 3 years from now. If my husband takes my 2010 and I get the new car (lady's perks  :) ) we probably will never have to buy another car.

Although, an excellent navigator, I have never owned an automobile nor had a license to drive one.

However, in my dreamy dreams I have one of these and a handsome chauffeur named....oh, I forget his name.  :)

Sazerac, now THAT was a Cadillac! Compare that unique styling with the undistinguished styling of the Cadillac below. I didn't even realize it was a Cadillac until I saw the logo at the end of the commercial. Phooey!

Hi, Joe-

I agree...that is usually what we did..the Jeep was the first "new" car we ever bought...the Chevy was a mistake..lol

When I bought the Fusion, I went to the dealership to buy a used one they had advertised..i decided not to buy it because I didnt like the interior...(with only 6K miles it was already looking bad)..how-ever, I have access to fords "A" plan..the sales lady did a little quick figuring and initially the price was the same or less than the used one was...so I decided to buy a new one..she was shocked when I told her i wasnt buying it from her...lol..i figured when I went to look at the used one, there was no decisions to be made except to buy it or not...with a new one, color and options are all choices, and if it was going to be my wifes car, I was going to let her make those choices...the sales lady wanted to know what she had to do to make a sale that day?..(get your minds out of the gutter..lol)..I told her she had to make me an offer I couldn't refuse..If I was going to  make choices for the wife, there had better be a good reason...lol  ..(she was working)....with the "A" plan, the price was set, so no negotiating on that..but she kept throwing in dealer options (lots of different extended warranties)  and kept giving more and more for the Cobalt..in the end I ended up paying less for the Fusion that I did the Cobalt when it was new...and on another note..I am "only" 53 and retired in January...I am certain I will have another car payment sometime in the future...lol..my cars last a long time, but not THAT long  :)

I always buy used, and run them until they won't run anymore - saves having to fuss about selling them later, and I usually sell the parts off separately for a few quid... Currently driving a 2002 Peugeot 206 GTi... Please don't judge me, lol... Spaces on my road are small, so needed a small car, but one with a reasonably large engine (just because)... thinks it's got about 88k on the clock, and I've kind if fell in love with the old girl - I thought that replacing my beloved Hyundai Coupe would be hard, but this car has made it manageable (yes, I get very attached to my cars, lol)

Of course what I really want is an early 70s Chevrolet Corvette Stringray... but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon!

How can I judge you when I don't even know what a Peugeot is? Lol

I drive a 2011 dodge caliber and hubby drives a 2002 ram. I traded in a 2002 jeep liberty just for a car that's better on gas. Hubby wants a ford fusion now. We has a fusion as a rental and hubby fell in love with it. He really wants a 2015 mustang because they look like "Eleanor" ( gone in 60 seconds).

I am a car guy. I name them and doddle over them. Watch every tv show, wash and wax, do any maintenance I can. If it has an engine I like it. American V-8 is favorite, everything else is just a box with wheels, but I respect each has its own reason.

I just traded the Hulk, a V-10 F350 crew cab with 94000 miles I owned for 13 years. Loved it but starting to rust pretty good and had that fixed once. It got 6-8 miles per gallon. So several reasons it had to go, but I miss it.

I always buy new. I pay invoice or lower. Not hard for any American car in a major city to negotiate this deal. Recent purchase was $250 under invoice plus all incentives. I researched for 5 months and found one I wanted and timed it pretty good. Roughly 8,000 below sticker on 52,000 dollar sticker. So more than made up any depreciation, and I get to break it in. We put less than 10,000 miles on any car we own a year. Buying used with 20,000 is like taking two or three years of use, and the best miles away to me. Maybe its a deal to some, but I am a car guy and those are important to me. I feel my deal and knowing its history is worth more. Wifes cars have 11 k on one and its a 2006 and 29k on other as 2009. So I like them nice, new, and I know what's been done to them and how they were cared for. Also buy my motorcycles new because I put a lot of miles on them and unlike cars they are even more important to know if they have been involved in accident. No wrecked bikes for me. Had once got knocked down at 10 mph by someone, sold it soon as repaired. Just the way I like it...

So we got

Sally is a 2006 Mustang GT (stick) with 11000 miles, only got 250 put on it this year due to cancer treatments. Already in storage for year. Got oil changed last few times with less than 1000 miles on it. Find another Mustang as clean and new inside and out would be impossible. Legend Lime Green and registered, only 93 made like it with v8, manual, and stock 18 polished rims.

Black Betty is a 2009 Escape 4x4 with 29,000 miles, just put in battery, good car, recommend this body style and set up (v6)

Unnamed (Batman, Domino, Mary, few others, just waiting for one to fit or be earned) 2014 F-150 Crew cab 4x4 5.0 v8 with 1200 miles.

Bruzer is a 2010 Harley Limited (black and blue paint) 33,000 miles

Some old names of car/bikes gone last 10 years, Scooter, Blue, Freedom, Race-car, Black Stallion, Bonnie the Bonnieville, Chopper, Sporty, and recent one THE HULK.

hey teacher---that's a Lincoln in your pic. New small suv- based on new Escape. It was just released two months ago. Only couple on our dealer lot- we got Lincoln dealer in town we go through lot all the time.

Caddies are nice- but Lincolns were always top dog to me. Last 10 years I would have either, but Caddie maybe nicer with v-8 available up till last year on some cars.

1999 dodge ram 2500 extended cab, cummins diesel, 8' bed, 5 speed....

working on 15 years old, and only 128,000 miles.  I will drive it until it disintegrates (rust will be its end). I get about 22 miles to the gallon which is impossible to do with the new trucks of today...

Plus the drive train is still worth about 10 to 12 thousand.. and that number keeps going up as less and less of them are available.

Older than yours, Joe.  1996 Toyota Avalon...the thing will not completely die.  I have black electrical tape over the check engine light (tried to fix it never found the cause), the past 3 years have had to get complete new sets of tires every year(for some reason the tires keep going bald down to the core), the ride is no longer smooth and the banging noise I just turn the radio up, something under my car is scraping the ground when I go up or down any sort of hill (afraid to look), I cannot lock my car totally, it cannot be unlocked from the outside, but it always starts and gets me to where I am going :)  I've had this car for about 5 years, my car before was an '03 Ford Focus, the engine seized on me, no warranty and a car payment to boot:)

  • 2006 Toyota Sequoia 4.7L V8, 273 horsepower, 314 ft/lbs torque, less than 20 MPG no matter what.
  • 2005 Chevy Cobalt 2.2L inline 4 cylinder, 145 horsepower, 155 ft/lbs torque, commuter car to and fro Washington, D.C., 31 MPG combined.
  • 2011 Ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7L V8 w/ hemispherical-shaped cylinder combustion chambers (HEMI) 397 horsepower, 407 ft/lbs torque, 21 MPG highway, 18 MPG combined.

Don't trust anybody to do any work (except tires & alignments) on them except myself.  If an engine goes, I'll yank it before I let somebody else do it.  New brakes & rotors, plugs & wires and a bunch of other stuff every year whether it needs it or not.  The Cobalt just got new front struts & springs, rear shocks and new control arm links 3 weeks ago.  The Ram will get new front & rear rotors, brakes, stainless steel braided brake hoses, new battery and new drive belt before winter.  The cobalt will get new front rotors, brakes, calipers and rear drums/brakes before winter.  As of last week the Sequoia is all done for winter.

Also, the paint on all cars are meticulously maintained with the 2 bucket wash system, Adam's polishes and my PC rotary buffer as needed for light scratches or a full paint correction.  I did a full paint correction on the Ram last winter, the Sequoia this past spring and the Cobalt last month.  The Sequoia and Ram took 2 days each to complete the correction and the Cobalt I got done in a few hours.  None should need a full paint correction again as my wife and I are the only one who will ever wash our vehicles.  Wash them incorrectly and you put light scratches and swirl marks in the paint.

One bay of our garage is set up for mechanical work and the other side for detailing.  The back of the garage has several workbenches for minor woodworking, chainsaws and other landscaping equipment.  Our garage is my second home.  Next on the list for the garage is a wood burning stove, probably in 2015.

I get things done a lot quicker now that I don't have to take smoke breaks or step back and smoke to admire my work.  It's a wonder I got anything done with all that smoking.

Opening my shutters today this is what I saw

rolls%2520outside%2520small.jpg

I waved excitedly at the driver and hollered,

'I'll be right out, sugar.  Just let me get out of these old paint rags !"

They were gone pecan before I had time to check my lipstick.

Please, y'all what kind of car is that ? Rolls ?  Bentley ?

It is mighty pretty even if the driver wasn't so friendly.
