HEALTH RISKS OF SECONDHAND SMOKE

Those who are regularly around the smoke of others (secondhand smoke) have a higher risk of:

  • Heart attacks and heart disease
  • Lung cancer
  • Sudden and severe reactions, including those involving the eye, nose, throat, and lower respiratory tract

Infants and children who are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke are at risk of:

  • Asthma (children with asthma who live with a smoker are much more likely to visit the emergency room)
  • Infections, including virus-caused upper respiratory infections, ear infections, and pneumonia
  • Lung damage (poor lung function)
  • Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

I was just talking to an ex-smoker about this yesterday. How it took me 35 years to realize what my smoking was causing to those around me.

I think deep down we realized it.  I mean why else would you see a couple of parents hiding behind the bushes smoking during a little league game?  That's addiction for you.  It made me put smoking before everything.  I use to roll my eyes and more lol at those that would pitch a fit because they had to walk by me smoking.  Now when I have to walk through a cloud of smoke, I cover my nose and mouth.  It's like night and day.

I have much guilt over the poor air quality I felt was fine for everyone around me so I could keep getting my fix.  For me, quitting was easier when I thought of the benefits to my children especially so I hope that this can help to motivate others.

To those sitting on the fence, you need to know that it's really doable.  I can guarantee that it won't be as hard as you thought and you will be amazed at the benefits of quitting.  Too many to count.

There was a time that I would have crawled 20 miles on my hands and knees just for one cigarette. It's so obvious to me now that I didn't care what other people were thinking about my smoke invading their space.
