I smoked my last cigarette right before going to bed. There were 13 cigarettes still in my pack. I did not throw them away. I thought keeping them made it feel like I was choosing not to smoke. I know many people feel this is dangerous but for me it has worked. Here I am these 13 cigarettes have been sitting on my patio for 15 months. In the Arizona heat and monsoons they have been on the shelf getting stale and covered in dust.Every once in a while I pick them up and count them yep they are all still there.I know I am never going to smoke them but I just can't throw them away.

We have started to remodel our patio. My husband and his smoking worker have been working out there all week. My husband told him I don't know why she still has these but they have been sitting here for more than a year. I am not messing with them so just leave them alone.

Yesterday I went outside to start cleaning up the mess because they are almost done! I went to the shelf I picked up my 13 cigarettes and said I think its time to throw them away now. I knew it almost immediatley I could feel the difference before I even opened them.I looked inside and there they were 11 cigarettes!!

He stole 2 of my 15 month old cigarettes. He knew how old they were.He knew they had been sitting out in the extreme weather the whole time, and he still wanted them. My throat hurts just thinking about it.

I threw away my 11 cigarettes yesterday.  It was a little bittersweet I really wanted to be throwing away 13. I am so happy to be free!

The Sarge had 10 or 12 in that last pack - not really sure anymore but it was more than half the pack. He took two out. One he smoked, one set it aside, and chucked the rest.

He still has the one he set aside to this day:

It now lives in a vacuum sealed shrine to all that was ruin in Sarge's health. A reminder of The Bad Times.

He's probably going to hold onto it[1] until his dying day.

Sarge is weirdly sentimental that way.

(he should probably clean under those fingernails when coming in from the garden and taking photos ...)

Easy Peasy

FOOTNOTE:

[1] ... but not, y'know, smoke it.

I tore my remaining cigarettes into shreds but kept my empty pack and wrote the date and time on it that I quit and put it on a shelf in the living room.

That guy smoking those old nasty cigarettes shows how much we were slaves to nicotine.  Anything for that fix.

That was excellent Bonnie, I hope you feel great that you finally got rid of them!

Sarge, MQ, I love what you did there!

I'm pretty sure I had about half an open pack and about 5 or 6 unopened packs left when I quit. I had planned to quit once they were finished, but we all know how that story ends... So I gave them to a colleague at work. I wish I'd just chucked them, but oh well, they are gone all the same.

MY hubs kept a half empty pack in the freezer I think it is still there his reasoning was that if we didnt have any in the house it would be too tempting to go buy some but it becomes a choice when they are around. Most of the time I forget they are even in there as does he.

I had 2 full cartons, 5 or 6 unopened packs and probably 1/2 pack when I quit.  I kept them for several months and then gave them away.  I always had plenty of cigs around!!

I cleaned house. I drowned all of my cigarettes and buried them in the trash. I threw away all of my lighters that I had been hoarding. I even threw away a couple of hundred dollars worth of brand new electronic vapor smoking equipment.

Being smoke free is worth it.  :)

Thats weird I thought I was the only one LOL

I kept 3 in a packet and they go with me everywhere

when I was really fighting - it helped me knowing they were there - gave me strength to resist

its getting close now when I will have a sacred bonfire with them - a ritual

I see where people are coming from where they see this as dodgy but for me it worked but it would not be for everyone - you have to feel whats right

so glad for you Bonnie :)

I'd like to say that's sick...but once I got some 10 year old sealed packs of cigs, all different brands that my grandma had kept when she had a shop - yep I smoked them inbetween my regular cigs, yikes!!

I'm feel for you that you couldn't throw away 13 but addicts will be addicts I guess, let's just make sure it's never us again.. xx

I have to ask... Why in the freezer?!

Thank you Bonnie this thread and writing about my 3 has made me bring forward my get rid of them ceremony

I thought when the day comes I was going to have a big bonfire and farewell/good bye ceremony

the truth was it was uneventful - I woke up this morning soaked them in water and chucked them in the bin

no emotion - no nothing

moving on - another corner turned :)

I thought It would be more of an event too. I think it was ruined for me when he took 2 of them. Those 13 cigarettes were kinda like a trophy to me. Look they are still here kinda thing. Funnily when he took those 2 my trophy was gone and tossing them in the can was easy. If all 13 were still there I might not have tossed them lol.  Not sure if his stealing them was a favor or not. They are gone now I guess thats all that matters.

Keeping them in the freezer keeps them fresh. I used to like to smoke a nice fresh cold one straight from the freezer.

ACTION!!!! You just made me romance the stinking cigarette!!! LMAO  :P

It's not something I like to admit, but I kept a half a pack of cigarettes for months after I quit. They're no longer kicking around.... I think I gave them to my mom (sigh). I think back then, I kept them around because I wasn't completely sold on my quit. I figured it would be temporary like the rest of them.

Well, we saw how well that turned out. ;)

I quit on vacation. As my cigarettes were running low, and I was reading the AC book, I brought the date forward. I tried to plan it to finish my last cigarette at bedtime. Predictably, I then subconsciously tried to sabotage the plan, by having 10 left as I neared the end of the book and bedtime! So, I sat on the terrace of the room, reading a page, smoking a cigarette. read another page, smoke another cigarette, until I got through the pack. Then I went to bed and woke up a non smoker.

Wow I thought I was the only one who keep smokes around.  I had a 1/2 of a pack in my car for 6 months.  On my 6 month quit I tossed them in the fire.  And the day after I went on vacation with the money I saved.
