I never had Hummus... until just now. Yesterday I went grocery shopping,

and I picked up some Hummus, I don't know exactly why. Garlic Hummus, to be exact.

 

Well I'm happy to say I LOVE it! I put some on flatbread crackers, and scooped some up with red pepper slices, baby carrots, and a tomato. Delicious!

 

Goes to show ya... you should never hesitate to try something new... you might just like it!

Hummus is amazingly HEALTHY....

 

 

Craving a healthy snack that packs plenty of nutrients, staying power to help you feel full and good flavor? Try hummus. Hummus is a spread or dip that's made with a base of chickpeas and some olive oil. There are many different ways to prepare it -- you can add a dash of lemon juice; one or several cloves of garlic; tahini paste; and salt and pepper. High Fiber

Chickpeas are legumes that are also called garbanzo beans. Beans such as chickpeas are an excellent source of fiber, which can help you keep cholesterol levels low and promote better heart health. Fiber-rich chickpeas also help diabetics regulate blood sugar levels, making hummus a particularly diabetes-friendly snack as well. The high fiber in chickpeas also helps promote a healthier digestive tract and fend off constipation.

Vitamins and Minerals

Chickpeas also boast a variety of other nutrients, vitamins and minerals that your body needs to stay healthy. They're a good source of folic acid, which is particularly important for women of childbearing age to help prevent the risk of birth defects in babies. Chickpeas also contain manganese, zinc, magnesium, copper and iron and are rich in protein, says Everynutrient.com.

How weird! I just finished making some!

 

Don't be scared-- all you need is a blender. And...

Can of garbanzo/chickpeas

Minced garlic

Olive oil

Cumin

Salt pepper

Paprika

Sesame seeds ( buy a few cups or so at a whole foods place)

 

Tahini paste is an ingredient in hummis. You can buy it or make it. This takes a few minutes but you don't have to make it every time you want hummis.

 

Ingredients:

 

5 cups sesame seeds

1 1/2 cups olive oil or vegetable oil

Preparation:

 

Preheat oven to 350. Toast sesame seeds for 5-10 minutes, tossing the seeds frequently with a spatula. Do not allow to brown. Cool for 20 minutes.

 

Pour sesame seeds into food processor and add oil. Blend for 2 minutes. Check for consistency. The goal is a thick, yet pourable texture. Add more oil and blend until desired consistency.

 

Yield: 4 cups

Storing Tahini

 

Tahini should be stored in the refrigerator in a tightly closed container. It will keep for up to 3 months.

 

Then for the hummis!

 

Put a can of drained chickpeas in the blender and add in about half the liquid. Blend on high until goopy.. Add in garlic to taste (I use about 3 tbsps) blender still running. Add in about 3 tbsps tahini paste. Add in about 1/4 tsp cumin and a dash or two of paprika . Add a drizzle of olive oil, till you have a smooth pudding consistency. Salt and pepper to taste. Voila!

 

You won't have to do the tahini step for awhile so the next batches will only take a couple minutes.

I LOVE hummus! It's one of my favourite go-to snacks. Yum.

I also discovered hummus shortly after I had quit, no idea why I dish by try it before because it's awesome. But maybe I just love everything chickpeas, lol.

Thanks for the recipe, Aine! Sounds delicious.... and DOABLE! I'll definitely try making my own, it doesn't seem that hard....:-)
