Or could you suggest some good resources?  I burned my lower leg back in Feb and what I thought was a slow healing second degree burn, turned infected is actually partially a third degree burn.  The middle part of the burn never closed up and I have been covering up a hole in my leg.  I was given the run down on why I might need one, so while I wait to finish the antibiotics and get an appointment, I just need to know all about it.

what do you want to know? They typically shave an area of healthy skin on another part of your body and put it on the area needing a graft and hopefully it will take depending on the bloodflow and healing.

edited to add some stuff: they will prepare the area for the graft by debriding and cleaning it up a bit first

Not to make light of a terrible situation, but my hips would like to make a donation to Colleen.  :)

A friend of mine feel off a motor cycle. Her road burn wounds did not heal so they did skin grafts at the hospital, out patient. It went well she came to work a week later.

lol Jenny, but seriously.  I am ignorant when it comes to this sort of thing.  Where does the extra skin come from?  How is it attached?  Do they numb you?  What is the healing time?  Can I go to the gym the same or next day?

Hmm. I will ask tomorrow where the skin came from. She had anesthesia but she had alot of burns to be cleaned and treated.

They will probably take the skin from your hip....they will put a local in it will possibly done under MAC anesthesia or general anesthesia , they sew  it on typically healing time depends on your health and the are itself the doc can tell you more on this.....I would hold off on the gym and ask the doc that question also.

Burns are terribly, terribly painful.

I burned my .....um.....ok....I burned my va-jay-jay in 1990.

The phone rang, I was trying to pour a cup of tea, multi-tasking and ended up dumping the scalding water on my crotch. (2nd degree on the left side but 3rd degree extending to the right side)

Ive had 4 kids......all natural births. I would have all 4 of them over again before I dealt with a burn like that again.

Thanks for the info and video...My burn I don't think is anywhere near the burn pictured there.  The yellow/green in the middle, I and even the ER Doc a couple weeks ago thought it was an infection.

When it first happened:

Three months later:

they will definitely clean that up a bit by debriding the tissue around the area but it looks like they wont need a big donor site(the area on your body where they will take a graft which is just shaving a layer off ) did they take cultures? (swab the wound) if so did they tell you the results?

Too much for me. Please excuse me while I faint.

Horrible!  So sorry you had to go through that!

I had a burn like Colleen's from a charcoal chimney starter (hot even when empty) and it did eventually heal, is that an option?

What I do know is that smokers heal tremendously slower than non smokers. And, much less scarring factor with non smokers, plus, much greater chance of the graft not being rejected. So, yeah for you!

Ah well, the doctor I saw said the inner portion is a 3rd degree burn and will not heal over.  I haven't seen a surgeon yet, my primary needs to refer me and well they don't have an appointment for a bit.  At the urgent care center, he did test me with a swab, and at home I checked, there is no feeling in the center of the burn.  I am such a klutz.  No more hot water bottles for me.
