So at my daughters school they do 1 x 45min health class a fortnight in years 7-8.... at the moment the moment her year 7 class is doing puberty but her normal teacher was away and they had a male teacher who decided instead of teaching 27 girls 12-14 years old about periods (the scheduled class) they would do a class on smoking.... so first they had a talk... then they watched this... and now all the girls can talk about is the 21 year old.... it bought it home to them I think...

So I'm all for the shock tactic.... so they watched this then they discussed the illnesses that would/could have caused the scars they saw and how they relate to cancer.

Well, Great Job by the substitute teacher I say!!

Not only did he get himself out of a potentially very uncomfortable teaching moment he made his alternate lesson really count by ensuring it impacted the students. Really great idea to have something a little edgy to show a group of kids that age. Makes them engage with the subject matter a lot easier. Well done sir!

When I went to school, a substitute teacher would just come in and assign a reading lesson then more less baby-sit us.

That hit me hard. These people, their scars, their illnesses, all the consequences of smoking suddenly had a face and a voice. What impressed me most was the artists’ attitude: no condemnation for bringing it all in themselves, no saying “it’s all your own fault”, just respect. That was beautiful and I feel so grateful for that.

All that I’m saying from my own perspective, adult’s perspective and ex-smoker’s perspective. Can’t say if it’s too much for teenagers. It’s definitely something to remember and not the usual, forgettable stuff.

Kudos to that teacher. The amazing thing from that lesson is that it is not only memorable, but it was presented in a way that I bet it generated a lot of discussion amongst the kids afterwards.

My little person despises smoking... she used to sit at the back sliding door making choking sounds and asking me when my smoking was going to make me die. She used to love saying my mummy smokes cos she is stupid but she did say one of the girls who she knows smokes is going to stop now.

I bet she's proud as Fukc that her Mommy has quit those cancer sticks, although, she'll never openly admit it because that's how teenagers roll :)

Yet another reason to stay quit Jo!
