  12. Hey all I was thinking of why this Forum works. As you participate you are building something over time. You can form relationships with individuals, hear advice from the group, help others maintain their quit, and make a daily NOPE pledge. All this adds up to a meaningful "thing". The "thing" begins to act as a counterbalance to the urge to smoke. When I have cravings I think of this forum first. It is not guilt, (they will judge me), but more of a feeling that I would be sacrificing all that I have done. It is making this quit different. During other quits the urge to smoke was meet with abstract ideas of negative consequences. These were often flimsy and wouldn't hold up. This is a strong, positive, structure we are building. And it works.
  13. Great post @StewieTech. The long-term consequences are very real but also there are immediate downsides - smell, anti-social, cost etc..

  17. Great thoughts everyone! The habit vs addiction distinction has to be made to make a quit last. I think a part of the addiction is a need and satisfaction cycle. It's a cycle independent of nicotine per say, which is why substituting hard candy for instance works. You want something - you satisfy that want. This dynamic is at the forefront and you could say that indeed smoking "does" provide something, the completion of the cycle of want. The trick seems to be A - finding other things to want or B - realizing that you don't need anything. Not at all saying I have this figured out, just some thoughts. Ken

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
