I've read a lot of Ben Elton and the stories usually have a few challenging ideas. This one is my favourite though and has an unexpected hero. Along with inconceivable his best work. I think you may like Colin Bateman, a lot of it set around NI factions, but in a lighthearted way. But the one I would recommend to anyone is the John Irving books. This one first. There are some that I'd recommend against.
