Welcome aboard the QTrain, Vince! I am also a 40+ year smoker who got thrown into a quit situation due to a medical issue that put me in the hospital for a week. Best thing that could have happened as things would get even worse before getting better but at least I had quit for over a year when the 2nd medical issue reared its ugly head. That is how you should look at your bout with pneumonia...it's the Universe way of saying "Hey, wake up...look what you are doing to yourself.....time to stop!"

Welcome aboard the QTrain, Castro! Read, read, read everything here to understand your nicotine addiction and watch the Joel videos. Yes, a major part of quitting is mental/mind games to be fought. It is important to know what you are fighting and how to fight it with the right tools and support. You have found the right place! Oh, how I wish I had never started smoking ... if only I had stopped at the age you are now (27) perhaps I wouldn't have had to go through what I did the last two years.

Great idea...I think I will do that! Thanks, Jillar!

I leave for Naples, Florida on May 5th! I missed my friend's wedding down there last year due to the life-saving surgery I had the month before I was to fly off.... None of my bathing suits fit me...not even the new ones I ordered in larger size!! Grrrr...will have to go shopping this weekend and see if I can find something...

Hi efficacy, welcome aboard the QT! This is my 3rd and forever quit....smoked 40+ years and had a 1 month quit about 30 years ago....then a torturous 6 month quit about 27 years ago (no internet at that time!) After some pretty serious medical issues, largely due to smoking, in the last 2 years (which I have spoken about here on QT) it was time to stop fooling around. I joined an online support group (QSMB) and I know how important that support is regarding how to deal with craves and triggers. The key thing for me was admitting that, yes, I was a nicotine addict and I really needed to educate myself. Read, read, read and watch the Joel videos and participate here...not only will you help yourself but others in the same boat as you! Take it one day at a time and the days will add up quickly. You can do this....

Hi Jeff and welcome aboard! I am also a 40+ year smoker and joined an online support group about 3 months into my quit... 2nd best thing I ever did (quitting was best thing I ever did!) Look around here and read, read, read and watch the Joel videos to gain an insight to your addiction and how it messes with you. Participate here, play games, get to know your fellow quitters. Take it one day at a time! The days will add up and things will get a bit easier as time goes on. Congrats on your almost 4 months quit!!! Celebrate your achievement and KTQ.

My constant coughing stopped after about a week...the terrible phlegm production after two weeks...and the problems with my eyes cleared up almost immediately and they were no longer bloodshot....God, I didn't realize what a mess I was! My messed up arteries took surgery to clear up and I have been dealing with that issue since the day I quit! PS Just had my one year anniversary last week since my CABGx3 surgery...got the thumbs up from cardiologist...echo normal, ekg normal, blood-work normal. What a relief...I can get back to my gardening with no restrictions!- 18 replies
