Brucie's House
Bruce had a house, Uptown New Orleans.
It looked a little like this but nicer,
wooden pillars and railings, a little gingerbread.
Built 1920's ? 20th century for sure,
not far from The Levee.
I stayed downstairs for a while
in Capt Roosters apartment while he was offshore.
It was one big and a few little low ceiling rooms.
Deep in the night or early morning,
drunk or sober,
I would see a shadow walk across the big room floor and wall.
There, in clear silhouette,
a man wearing a top hat and flared knee-length, high collar coat.
I want to say he had a cane
but, that is more likely imagination than memory.
The shadow looked like the kind of man who would have a cane
and be wearing early 19th century clothes.
I didn't feel frightened
only a rush,
the initial shock !
What IS that ?
My body was on a kind of alert
as when seeing something unexpected
but, he didn't give me the wooo wooo shivers.
His shadow would walk across,
as if on a diagonal path, every night?
I thought of him walking home after a soiree or, a late supper in the Quarters.
I saw him too many times to mention.
When Capt Rooster came back onshore,
I asked him about the shadow and he said,
"oh, I forgot to mention..."
wooo woooo
