  6. no need to take it to the extreme....not what I meant at all. I guess what sue was saying is that you seem to take everything too serious..and I'm not talking about just colonoscopies...you seem to be serious about everything. Being uptight causes cancer too...the same cancer that everyone is having tubes put up the arse to find. I don't think there is anything anyone can say here that will convince a person to get a colonoscopy or not. Let's face it....having anything stuck up your arse isn't pleasant (unless you like that sort of thing...like sarah) so there is no way in hell you will convince me that it is all roses and candy. But....as an informed adult...I make my own decisions. I'm 47 and haven't had one yet....I guess when I'm 50 I will have one. I'm not a fan of doctors...and i'm just now starting to get brave and go. I have an eye doctor appointment next week. Never had an eye exam in my life. There are many reasons why people don't go to doctors...FEAR is a big one. When I was an overweight smoker...I could not bring myself to the doctor and have them tell me bad news or tell me to quit smoking and lose weight..information I already knew. Figured it was a waste of my time. I know that's kind of silly but that's where my head was at. I also figured....when I die..I die.

  13. guess babs is going batship crazy cause I got more...lol I have 25 years experience as a nurse...so I've seen a lot of patients....in and out of our rehab. People who are obese have just as many medical problems as smokers. As someone who had both...I was always trying to work on the weight first...finally i figured out I had to quit the smoking first. Then work on the exercise and diet. Smoking has got to go. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Over two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese, and one in three Americans is obese. The prevalence of obesity in children has increased markedly. Obesity has also been increasing rapidly throughout the world, and the incidence of obesity nearly doubled from 1991 to 1998. Obesity is not just a cosmetic consideration; it is a dire dilemma directly harmful to one's health. In the United States, roughly 112,000 deaths per year are directly related to obesity, and most of these deaths are in patients with a BMI over 30. For patients with a BMI over 40, life expectancy is reduced significantly. Obesity also increases the risk of developing a number of chronic diseases, including the following: Insulin resistance. Insulin is necessary for the transport of bloodglucose (sugar) into the cells of muscle and fat (which is then used for energy). By transporting glucose into cells, insulin keeps the blood glucose levels in the normal range. Insulin resistance (IR) is the condition whereby the effectiveness of insulin in transporting glucose (sugar) into cells is diminished. Fat cells are more insulin resistant than muscle cells; therefore, one important cause of insulin resistance is obesity. The pancreas initially responds to insulin resistance by producing more insulin. As long as the pancreas can produce enough insulin to overcome this resistance, blood glucose levels remain normal. This insulin resistance state (characterized by normal blood glucose levels and high insulin levels) can last for years. Once the pancreas can no longer keep up with producing high levels of insulin, blood glucose levels begin to rise, resulting in type 2 diabetes, thus insulin resistance is a pre-diabetes condition. Type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases with the degree and duration of obesity. Type 2 diabetes is associated with central obesity; a person with central obesity has excess fat around his/her waist, so that the body is shaped like an apple. High blood pressure (hypertension). Hypertension is common among obese adults. A Norwegian study showed that weight gaintended to increase blood pressure in women more significantly than in men. The risk of developing high blood pressure is also higher in obese people who are apple shaped (central obesity) than in people who are pear shaped (fat distribution mainly in hips and thighs). High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) Stroke (cerebrovascular accident or CVA) Heart attack. A prospective study found that the risk of developing coronary artery disease increased three to four times in women who had a BMI greater than 29. A Finnish study showed that for every 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) increase in body weight, the risk of death from coronary artery disease increased by 1%. In patients who have already had a heart attack, obesity is associated with an increased likelihood of a second heart attack. Congestive heart failure Cancer. Obesity has been linked to cancer of the colon in men and women, cancer of the rectum and prostate in men, and cancer of the gallbladder and uterus in women. Obesity may also be associated withbreast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women. Fat tissue is important in the production of estrogen, and prolonged exposure to high levels of estrogen increases the risk of breast cancer. Gallstones Gout and gouty arthritis Osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis) of the knees, hips, and the lower back Sleep apnea
  14. listen mister....I work out for my health...i don't give a rat's ass about being skinny..I never want to be skinny. My cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar are now perfect and I don't take medicine. I never want to take medicine. I hate doctors...that's why I became a nurse...so I can cure myself of ailments and so far, I have dodged the bullets thanks to eating healthy and exercising... and before I get the lecture from those of you who run to the doctor every 5 minutes....stuff it.... I find it hypocritical to stick cheeseburgers in your mouth...sit on the couch and be sedentary..and then go to the doctor and get blood pressure medicine, blood sugar medicine, cholesterol medicine...go to the pharmacy...fill it out...pop the pills...and eat the cheeseburger and sit on the couch again...that's insane. I understand even slim people have these illnesses and they can't help it...but I"m guessing 90 percent of them can So...there!
  15. wanted to share this from a page in a book by one of my favorite authors...Pema Chodron. Did a 2 day workshop with her 5 years ago. What a privilege that was..life changing. "Life is glorious, but life is also wretched. It is both. Appreciating the gloriousness inspires us, encourages us, cheers us up, gives us a bigger perspective, energizes us. We feel connected. But if that's all that's happening, we get arrogant and start to look down on others, and there is a sense of making ourselves a big deal and being really serious about it, wanting it to be like that forever. The gloriousness becomes tinged by craving and addiction. On the other hand, wretchedness--life's painful aspect--softens us up considerably. Knowing pain is a very important ingredient of being there for another person. When you are feeling a lot of grief, you can look right into somebody's eyes because you feel you haven't got anything to lose--you're just there. The wretchedness humbles us and softens us, but if we were only wretched, we would all just go down the tubes. We'd be so depressed, discouraged, and hopeless that we wouldn't have enough energy to eat an apple. Gloriousness and wretchedness need each other. One inspires us, the other softens us. They go together.” ― Pema Chödrön, Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living

  23. a sense of humor is why i'm alive today....I am not joking about that one There is humor in just about everything Chrysalis....and just by joking about things that are serious can actually help serve a person who is nervous about having a procedure I have a history of grand mal seizures.....at least 2 times a month in my 30's I had unexplained seizures that landed me in the hospital on many occasions. I cried a lot...I was in danger of losing my license or kill someone accidentally while I seized..I was worried about my health, my family finding me dead...I was frustrated and angry. But still....I was able to make jokes about myself flopping like a fish on the floor and how I peed my pants. Joking about it...always...ALWAYS made me feel better and see the humor in how we making such big deals of ourselves by being too serious all the friggin time Life is a gift...and we were given a sense of humor for a reason...and I don't believe it was for shitz and giggles (no pun intended Mike....or...yes...that was a pun) I believe it was given to us for survival that's my story...and I'm sticking to it
  24. same here!! and I too was afraid to say it. There were a couple of times I thought I was getting something...and then I would just sleep it off and wake up feeling ok. I was surrounded by sick people too..thought for sure I would get it. Keep keepin it real Chrispy!!

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
