You're definitely not getting any younger. :read:

What's telling is when a new quitter comes and goes quickly because most haven't gotten to the point to understand that they're addicted to a drug - they're drug addicts and don't treat quitting smoking as such. Many feel as if they're giving something up that they enjoy and or something that helps them cope with stress, none of which is true. Then perhaps there are those who come and go just as quickly yet have maintained solid quits. :)

That's great about your bp and I love your positive attitude and your ability to understand how much worse things would/could be had you not quit smoking. Imagine 15 years from now had you not quit! That goes for all of us! Yikes! Congrats!! :)

Interesting point about Nicoteen
MarylandQuitter replied to Jules1977's topic in Quit Smoking Discussions
Congrats on your week free of nicotine! Vaping with or without nicotine is playing with fire. Are you sure your 0 mg juice (or whatever it's called) is actually nicotine-free? Even so I maintain, it's one step removed from smoking a cigarette. Good luck with keeping a forever quit because you're puffing and it's just a matter of time before you get a hold of some "juice" that has nicotine and you could be back to a full-fledged nicotine addiction. Is it worth it? Is Your Nicotine-Free Electronic Cigarette Actually Nicotine Free? Recent studies show that some electronic cigarette fluids being marketed as nicotine free actually contain nicotine. Video discusses the real danger for any former smoker who tries one of these products. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kq-UH7-Ed0&feature=youtu.be Link to articles about these studies: -E-cigarette nicotine labels not always accurate https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases... -'Nicotine-Free' E-Cigs Still Deliver the Juice https://www.medpagetoday.com/pulmonolo... -

https://quittrainblog.com/chemicals-in-cigarettes/ Tobacco smoke contains a deadly mix of more than 7000 chemicals and at least 70 of those chemicals are known to cause cancer and at least 250 are known to be harmful. The list of 599 additives approved by the US Government for use in the manufacture of cigarettes is something every smoker should see. Submitted by the five major American cigarette companies to the Dept. of Health and Human Services in April of 1994, this list of ingredients had long been kept a secret. Tobacco companies reporting this information were: American Tobacco Company, Brown and Williamson, Liggett Group, Inc., Philip Morris Inc. & R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Chemicals in Cigarettes: Carcinogens A carcinogen is defined as any substance that can cause or aggravate cancer. Approximately 70 of the chemicals in cigarettes are known to cause cancer. Benzene Benzene can be found in pesticides and gasoline. It is present in high levels in cigarette smoke and accounts for half of all human exposure to this hazardous chemical. Formaldehyde Formaldehyde is a chemical used to preserve dead bodies, and is responsible for some of the nose, throat and eye irritation smokers experience when breathing in cigarette smoke. Pesticides Pesticides are used on our lawns and gardens, and inhaled into our lungs via cigarette smoke. TSNAs Tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines (TSNAs) are known to be some of the most potent carcinogens present in smokeless tobacco, snuff and tobacco smoke. Vinyl Chloride Vinyl Chloride is a man-made chemical that is used in making plastics and is in cigarette filters. Chemicals in Cigarettes: Toxic Metals Toxic / heavy metals are metals and metal compounds that have the potential to harm our health when absorbed or inhaled. In very small amounts, some of these metals support life, but when taken in large amounts, can become toxic. Arsenic Commonly used in rat poison, arsenic finds its way into cigarette smoke through some of the pesticides that are used in tobacco farming. Cadmium Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal that is used in batteries. Smokers typically have twice as much cadmium in their bodies as nonsmokers. Chemicals in Cigarettes: Radioactive Toxic Metals There are a couple of toxic metals in cigarette smoke that carry an extra punch of danger for anyone breathing it in: they are radioactive. Radioactive Cigarette Smoke Lead-210 (Pb-210) and polonium-210 (Po-210) are poisonous, radioactive heavy metals that research has shown to be present in cigarette smoke. Chemicals in Cigarettes: Poisons Poison is defined as any substance that, when introduced to a living organism, causes severe physical distress or death. Science has discovered approximately 250 poisonous gases in cigarette smoke. Ammonia Ammonia compounds are commonly used in cleaning products and fertilizers. Ammonia is also used to boost the impact of nicotine in manufactured cigarettes. Carbon Monoxide Carbon monoxide is present in car exhaust and is lethal in very large amounts. Cigarette smoke can contain high levels of carbon monoxide. Hydrogen Cyanide Hydrogen cyanide was used to kill people in the gas chambers in Nazi Germany during World War II. It can be found in cigarette smoke. Nicotine Nicotine is a poison used in pesticides and is the addictive element in cigarettes. • Acetanisole • Acetic Acid • Acetoin • Acetophenone • 6-Acetoxydihydrotheaspirane • 2-Acetyl-3- Interesting point about Nicoteen
MarylandQuitter replied to Jules1977's topic in Quit Smoking Discussions
Our goal, as should also be yours, is to get off of nicotine completely. We're not going to debate how "addictive" nicotine is or isn't because the fact remains that smoking is deadly. Our goal is to get people off of nicotine quickly and permanently. You see, as nicotine addicts, when we introduce nicotine into our bodies, we run the high risk of going back to smoking 2 packs/day. Vaping websites are completely irrelevant and have an entirely different goal than we do. Please, do not muddy the waters with this vaping stuff, okay? Yes or no? If you want to quit smoking and get off of nicotine, this is your place. If you want to straddle the fence, tout how great vaping is, this is not the site for that. Welcome, nervousnellie! I didn't seek out a doctor to help me quit but it was a doctor who gave me some tough love and told me that I was an addict. Without that conversation, I don't know where I'd be today. You're already here. :) The best way to quit smoking is to simply not take another puff. There are many resources here to help you succeed at this. :) Smoking Doesn't Help Solve Stress Video discusses how smoking cannot solve stress, and in actuality usually results in making people more nervous in general than if they were former smokers or had never smoked in their lives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6C5eTa93JSs&index=25&list=PL4F05C03D0F9B86DB Nicotine Is Nicotine Is Nicotine Video discusses how nicotine delivered by any source via any route of administration has the full potential of causing relapse to any former smoker or user of any nicotine product. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KViTfIfHUv0&list=PL4F05C03D0F9B86DB&index=6 Quitting Is More Doable Than Most People Think The idea that quitting smoking is close to impossible is often perpetuated at Internet quit sites. Welcome PeaceTrain! I love that song. Not thinking or fixating on lighting up a cigarette is a fantastic thing to so, especially when the urge or a crave sneaks up on you. However, don't EVER forget that you're a nicotine addict, a former smoker and all that it takes is one puff bring the addiction back in full-swing. Since I've quit, a lot of life has happened and not once did the thought of lighting up a cigarette enter my mind. Even as a just wrote that, I find it hard to believe that's the case but it is, despite being an ex-smoker whose life revolved around smoking. Make no mistake, I have never forgotten that I'm a smoker and I never want to forget because the time I do is the time I open the back door to some junkie talk, let my guard down and take that puff. For me, I made quitting a part of who I was and ultimately who I am today. I can't change the past but I can control what I do with this addiction and keeping myself nicotine-free requires that I never forget that I'm a nicotine addict. In the early days and months of my quit, this support group is was held me accountable and the constant talking, reading and learning has allowed me to get the point that I've stayed quit for over 3 1/2 years and when life happens, I don't think of smoking to get me through or perhaps even celebrate. From my experience, you're better equipped to succeed if you're an active participant in a support group, especially during the first year. :) Talking To Others About Not Smoking Video discusses how talking both to long-term quitters as well as to people who are current smokers can help to strengthen your resolve to never take another puff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n08bxg01NOw I'll Come For Reinforcement When I Need It Video talks about the benefits of regularly reinforcing your quit when things are easy as opposed to relapsing and having to try to quit again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiIOvdMZ7us&list=PL4F05C03D0F9B86DB&index=12 Complacency Video discussing the importance of not allowing yourself to become complacent after longer term success not smoking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZSktbwotI4&index=30&list=PL4F05C03D0F9B86DB Come Share Your Strengths, Come Share Your Vulnerabilities Video talks about how helping others who are in the midst of quitting can help you to secure your own quit over the long-term. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIloKURIIic&index=44&list=PL4F05C03D0F9B86DB
