  1. I recently saw this CDC anti-smoking campaign ad and it really hit me hard. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It struck me that had I seen this before I quit smoking it wouldn’t have convinced me to quit. I would have watched it as I would a horror film, probably lighting up as soon as it was over and going on about my day, my way, as an addict. The one truth I’ve learned during my own quit and from other’s stories is that your quit has to be your decision and for you. Nothing anyone says or does will cause you to put those smokes down once and for all. It’s got to come from within. It’s got to be you. My fear is in what way the effects of all those years of smoking are going to show up. Will it be my teeth, jaw, heart, lungs, feet, and/or etc., etc? It’s coming, eventually. I know it. It has to. I just hope that I can draw on the strength it took for me to quit to see me through any complications that arise. All in all, I’m thankful there are Stop Smoking campaigns out there. If they can give a smoker pause to consider exactly what they are doing to themselves and what they can expect in the future soberly enough to try quitting for good then they are worth it. So if you are here reading this and wanting to quit look these ads up. Listen to their stories, read the stories posted on this forum. They help. They help so much. But ultimately it’s you. Just you, the addict and the substance of your addiction. And yes, there is victory to be had. You just have to fight for it.

  2. Thanks everyone, this milestone means so much. My daughters birthday is Monday and when I asked her what she would like she said this is the best present she could ask for. Time for some snoring.... Goodnight you great bunch of quitters.

  3. You're absolutely correct @Gus! It IS our decision and ours alone that lead all of us to quit. No one and no images ever made a difference in terms of influencing us to quit. That must come from within for whatever reason and at whatever time is right for us as individuals. That's just the way it is. We can't change what we did in our past or the decisions we made but we can celebrate that we found the courage & willpower to quit and that IS important! It's a huge achievement and at least we are no longer adding to the damage we've caused ourselves over our smoking years. That's all we can do and it's critical that we maintain our quit status for the same reason. We can't take back our smoking years and we will always be addicts but we can quite comfortably be non-practicing addicts.

  6. The Quittrain can't start a quit but we can make the process much easier with knowledge, experiences, and encouragement. A new quitter does not have to be alone. Take a leap of faith.

  8. Sorry I’m so late in welcoming you aboard, @LoriB. You have done such a great thing for yourself in quitting smoking and vaping. I’m sorry about the upcoming layoff. Scary and stressful I know. It’s great that your brother-in-law referred you to us as this site and it’s great members can help you along in building a good solid foundation. How are you getting along?

  10. Beautiful post @Gus I did have the thought that if nothing convinced us to quit when we smoked; and that video will likely not convince anyine also, what exactly will? During the initial days of my quit, I wanted to (and did as well with some folks) tell everyone - friends, strangers - that they could quit also. Don't think it convinced anyone though which was a bit disappointing.

  11. Just wanted to introduce myself. I just joined tonight. A health scare prompted my quit on 05/30/2024. The first 6 days I was in the hospital with plenty to think about and I really didn't miss vaping. But now I'm home, nobody else home with me, and I find myself thinking about it more. I quit cigarettes probably 7 years ago and started vaping. Thought it was "better" for me. But I know better than that in reality. I am 61 years old, and just found out last Monday that I will be unemployed on 8/12/24. I'm afraid that will be a trigger for me as well. The company I have worked for for 42 years is closing. I look forward to any and all advice and help that you all have to offer. My brother in law quit a few years ago using this site, and he recommended it to me.

  19. Welcome aboard, @LoriB. And congrats on your 24-day quit! It’s good that you’re seeking out positive reinforcement here and thinking ahead about triggers that lie ahead. Those are two good ways to protect your quit. Addiction is a wily opponent, though, and it will try to pounce on you when you’re vulnerable, or try to rationalize that just an occasional vape here and there won’t hurt. Don’t fall for that hogwash! Stay strong, stay free. You’ll be glad you did.

  21. Welcome @LoriB You are doing a great thing in quitting vaping and you did a great thing in quitting smoking several years ago. I am sorry for your health scare and i hope things get better. My last year or two as a smoker, I tried to quit by switching to vaping and e-cigs, thinking that it was somehow better than smoking regular tobacco cigarettes. I made three misguided attempts to switch over, each lasting a few weeks, and I grew to think I was actually vaping more than I was smoking. I actually got weird feelings in my gums and sharp headaches that I didn't experience with smoking. It would not surprise me if sometime down the line , it is determined that vaping is just as bad, if not worse, than regular smoking.....that is just my opinion. Anyway, it is best to leave both the vapes and smokes behind. I am sorry to hear about your potential layoff from your job in the upcoming months but vaping, or smoking, will not make anything better. Stick around this site and continue to reach our for help when you need it. I am not going to ask who your bother in law is (unless you care to share) but he made a good decision in recommendiing you to come here. We are a somewhat odd bunch but we really belive in helping others kick the nicotine habit once and for all. Life is much better without nicotine.

About us

QuitTrain®, a quit smoking support community, was created by former smokers who have a deep desire to help people quit smoking and to help keep those quits intact.  This place should be a safe haven to escape the daily grind and focus on protecting our quits.  We don't believe that there is a "one size fits all" approach when it comes to quitting smoking.  Each of us has our own unique set of circumstances which contributes to how we go about quitting and more importantly, how we keep our quits.
