I quit for ten years without a problem. Then this last go around it has taken me five years to get five months. Everyone is different so its no good (and damaging) to compare ourselves to others who don't seem to have a challenge with quitting. Also, I am mindful that we really don't know the true benefits of coming on this board, falling in like and love with people we are unlikely to meet but to whom we tell our deepest, darkest secrets. Yes, we quit smoking. But I think there is magic here that goes beyond that-community, understanding, compassion. All things we looked for in the cigarette and didn't find. Maybe we all looked for those things in other people, situations, things too and didn't find. And here it is on the QT.6 points

I don't know how people ever quit smoking w/o a team behind them. Around 20yrs ago, my father in law quit smoking w/o NRT, internet, etc. He promised himself he would buy a riding lawnmower if he quit, and then just quit and that was it. Hasn't smoked since. I have to have my keys hidden, make lists to keep me occupied, and come here for therapy. lol Oh well, I'm still thankful to have you all here to give me therapy cause smoking is a messed up thing to do.5 points

Ending day 4. Checked off all the boxes on my list for the day. Bigly News: I drove my car tonight. Yes, I had to get some miniblinds from Menards that I special order 4wks ago. So I had my wife get the key she hid. Of course she was by the door when I returned and didn't say anything but I knew she was checking to see if there was a hint of smoke on me. This would have been a 3 cigarette trip in the past. Gave her my key to hide again. Won't need car again till next Wed when I have to go to the dentist. I feel like such a putz for feeling great for having driven my car w/o inhaling burning leaves. Such is the life of an addict. Celebrate every win.5 points

Just finished vacuuming and fabreezing when I came in and read this. Actually, since my car is the main place I smoke, I'm constantly fabreezing. Right now it smells very stale in the car. I'll be leaving the windows open the next 2 weeks other than at night or when raining. Think I'm going to go on a bike ride now. Want to burn some calories.4 points

When I quit, I sprayed the car down with Febreeze, seats, carpets, headliner. Wiped down the rest of the car with water containing vinegar, baking soda. It really cut down that smoke smell. Kept the windows open in the driveway during the day and in the garage at night. Happy to say the car no longer has that scent. When I first quit it was hard to drive without a smoke because the car was a reminder.4 points

Day 5 of NOS ending. NO Smoking. I should mention my exercise. As I've said, I intentionally developed a habit of exercising everyday 5 years ago. Now I crave exercise as much as I crave cigarettes (and yes, I still want to smoke). I do a lot of types of exercise, but one form of exercise I do is called MovNat. MovNat is a combination of getting outdoors and exercising in nature, but also ground based exercising that can be done indoors or outdoors and requires no equipment. There is a ton of youtube videos on Movnat, just google it. It's especially useful as you get older as it focuses on mobility. In fact, many movnat practitioners are also into Parkour. I'm 61 and I'm working on vaults over bars, forward rolls, side rolls, swinging on bars, etc. Well, thats my little plug for Movnat.3 points

@intoxicated yodaWell, went to be at 7pm last night and slept until 11am this morning. Hate to say it but I went with what I call a margarita day. Drank them all day friday. Alternated with gatorade. Ate lots of good food. Woke with no hangover signs. Feel the best I have for a long time. I do not recommend this method but it worked for me.3 points

20 years ago these companies probably weren't as efficient at hacking our brains as they are today. keeping us confused and malnourished keeps us buying their products. I found it much easier to quit cigs by quitting coffee, sugar and any food that's processed. I still want all those things but it seems to be much easier to say no to all than just one.3 points

You should be proud. That is a big trigger to get though, your wife will be proud of you too.3 points

Congrats mate. That is an achievement and a win. See the thing with a successful quit is we need to celebrate the wins. They may be small, the may be big but celebrate them, reach over and pat yaself on the back. Fun fact, 4 or 5 months into my quit I had a melt down panic attack because I was scared to use my sewing machine because it was so linked to smoking for me...sew a seem, have a durry....rejoice in your achievement it's a big step, come Wednesday's dentist trip you already know you can do this, cos guess what, you just did.3 points

The cigerette our parents smoked ,are not the same as today ... After watching the 3 Documentaries here ,I learnt they are adding stuff all the time to keep us addicted People actually spend their working days finding ways to keep the poor smoker hooked ...2 points

@Krismy heart goes out to you for having that problem. If the doctor doesn't have any ideas and the sleeping pills don't help I seem to be getting relief from changing the diet and just getting outside a few times a day. Praying you find a solution that works for you.2 points

@jillarLet's go with it. What can you do with a coffee table? Cover it with food delights, rotel cheese dip, 7 layer dip, guacamole, artichoke dip shrimp dip, spinach dip, and all varieties of chips, crackers, breads, and veggies. Then you wait for someone to arrive with a cooler of beer!1 point

you said it right there. celebrate every win. driving was a huge trigger for me as well so to turn a 3 cigarette trip into a smoke free drive is a gigantic hurdle to clear1 point

@JustinHoot99 @Sunnyside @intoxicated yoda I don't post as a distraction. I am just trying to relate my feelings and struggle with my quit. We are all different in our thoughts and our quits. That is what is so helpful about this board. We can say how we feel, our deepest darkest thoughts. We need to address those things without judgement. Through others I have realized there are so many things that I have never vocalized, even in my mind. Things I had never even thought of. Things that I have done or would do for the habit. The truth, the thing for me at this point is I am older, my smoking is a problem, it has been verified by tests and my doctor. I have got to figure out how and why I want to go forward in my life. I have smoked weed many times over many years but I always enjoyed cigarettes after. I would enjoy it now to help with my migraines. I don't do it now as I am an old lady because it is not legal in my state and I would have no idea how to get it even if I wanted. I will say, that I think one day I will have that choice legally but I will go with the edibles like @jillar. My lungs have had enough of anything I have to inhale. Never think I don't get it because I do. My husband did not have lung cancer but skin cancer that went to his lungs. He never smoked cigarettes but really enjoyed the other. I was there through all the treatments, chemo, surgery, oxygen tanks, concentrators and portables. All the travel for clinical trials. You never think that something will come and tear apart your whole world that you have worked so hard to build. He was only 46 at diagnosis, 51 when I lost him. It made no sense, I was the smoker in our family. That I have seen up close and personal. I have been the caregiver to that person. I don't want my son to ever have to be that person with me. He was only 17 when this happened to his Dad. He was forever scarred by it. I share these things because it is important for people to understand it does happen. Don't think it could not happen to your family. I don't want any child to lose a parent early. I don't want any husband or wife to go through the heartbreak of losing their spouse. If you continue to smoke, accept the risk and prepare for the future. My husband and I did not come from money. We worked hard and made good financial decisions for retirement. My son was able to go to a good college, with no student loans, our home had been paid off and I am safe and comfortable. We had planned and saved for all of this. What we did not expect that he would not be here. Just another truth that I can't change but I can quit smoking.1 point

Hi Kris. Well this certainly is a work in progress. I did take a Benadryl the last two nights to try and get on some sort of sleeping pattern. It helped some but I still woke up around four. I did manage to get back to sleep but in the morning I still feel like I need more sleep. When I do get out I am going to get some Valerian as Kel suggested. In the meantime we are just going to stay strong and deal with the ups and downs coming our way. Just keep remembering all this is temporary. Stay strong1 point
