Hi my name is Dianne. I have been smoke free 1 day now. I am 56 and have smoked for 40 years. Have been sick with a upper respiratory infection which turned to bronchitis. Just came off the medicines (except for the inhaler) they gave me for that. Now I am convinced I also have GERD which making my breathing hard too (bought some Prilosec today in hope of help with that) I do not have health insurance or a doctor. I also am convinced I having anxiety attacks. I day smoke free and I feel like I falling apart in multiple ways. Trying to hang in. Came across this place in my searches of how to hang in...not doing so good but am glad I found a place to read other peoples experiences.4 points

Jeff .... Never give trying to Give up .... BKP is right though ....it's all about the attitude..... I once said Quitting is like doing the Okey Kokey.... You have to put your whole self in ... ..... It's not use being half hearted ... I know you can do it ....you yourself have to believe you can ...then maybe you will....!!!!4 points
-
Jeff That type of attitude is just setting yourself up for failure. You're saying that if you have more quit days this year than last that would be good. You are giving yourself permission to smoke as long as you do better than before. It seems like you stress out because the big picture of never smoking again feels too overwhelming. I felt that anxiety too. Eventually I realized that I had to focus on short-term goals and cast aside the goals that were too consuming. Just get through each day for now and acknowledge that each day is a success. You'll get there if you take little steps.4 points

No, no, no, you don't need a full commitment in order to be on the path to quitting. Yes, we'd all like to have an epiphany and say, "That's it, I'm 100% convinced, I'll never smoke again." Some people have that, whether it's because someone they love died of a smoking-related disease, or they just got sick and tired of spending all that money to enrich tobacco moguls. (When you don't smoke, it's amazing how much money you have to invest in stocks.) This is sometimes a journey to being a nonsmoker, not an instant teleportation to going from smoking to a nonsmoking space. I was a serial quitter for a couple of years, maybe three. The only reason I'm quit today (1 yr and almost 2 months) is because every time I lapsed, I'd tell myself that I'd keep at it, I'd keep looking for reasons that were strong enough to keep me from smoking. I'd stop for a while--days, weeks, even months. When Covid hit, I had my strong enough reason--my kids would be devastated if I died of Covid because my lungs were compromised by smoking. It's easy to say, "well, I'm not 100% into being a nonsmoker, so I won't try at all." Keep quitting front and center in your mind, even as you light the next cigarette. Keep being a nonsmoker as your aim. At some point, if you keep piling on the reasons to quit, you'll reach your tipping point and quit for good. Good luck, my friend4 points

Dianne, most people will agree that the first three days are the worst when quitting, so you're through one of them. Do you have a plan to help get yourself through? Lots of helpful suggestions here; walking or any form of exercise, drinking lots of fluids, keeping busy and the company of a non-smoking friend if possible. Plenty of sleep will help too. You will have to trust us that it will get better! I'm only on day 14 after multiple attempts to quit and this forum has helped a lot. I have breathing problems too and for some the improvement is huge after quitting, but for me it's slower as I have damaged my lungs a lot after 40 plus years of smoking. Do you have a nicotine replacement to help you through these tough days? Some use patches but I've found a nicotine spray very good for those strong cravings. I hope things improve for you soon. All the best.3 points

Welcome aboard @Dianne and congratulations on taking back your life. I'm sorry you're not feeling well but you'll be happy to know that you'll recover much quicker when you quit smoking so I hope you start feeling better soon. Quitting can cause some anxiety in the beginning and some of us have asked our Dr for temporary meds to help. Since you don't have a Dr you can try drinking juices and lots of water to help get the nicotine out of your system faster. Water also helps break up the phlegm We have a great group of quitters here who can support you through the quit process as well as a ton of great and educational posts and videos about our addiction. You can do it, we're all proof3 points

Hi Diane. I don’t get on here much anymore but I just happen to across your post. I smoked for 37 years. I quit when I was sick with a cold or flu or some thing a few years ago. It’s the best thing I ever did for myself. Lots of people here have smoke a lot of cigarettes and gave them up. You can too. If you hang around here you won’t smoke. hang in there. I’ve pretty much convinced myself that if I can do it anyone can.2 points

I was just posting about this in the Curse thread @Abby. It's bad lately in the southern Ont area and many other areas across Canada. You're right. More vaccines in arms asap is what's needed. We all thought we'd be in a lot better position now even new years day 2021. Been a disappointing start but hopefully a happier ending to 2021?2 points

Happy to see this group . Documenting and committing to excersise keeps me accountable . I was doing well until just recently . I noticed I am a bit down motivationally so this group being here will definitely help with my commitment . Yesterday I walked , let's see I don't have a fit bit or a step counter but in terms of city blocks I walked 21 blocks to a beautiful little site overlooking the pond-grabbed a ten minute break and bottle of water then walked 21 blocks back home . That made up for no excersise beyond my usual the day before lol . Temp 18 degrees Celsius . Today it's 7 degrees Celsius rain snow mix but sun is out now so putting it off isn't an excuse anymore . I try to attack this the same way and my quit . No excuses , just get the job done ! A new paved path was created in my neighbourhood last year .. pretty neat once our trees finally get leaves and flowers start to bloom .. it's about 2O blocks in the opposite direction on the outskirts of the city so it's seems like your not in the city at all so thats where I'm headed . Living in the city country style . Have a good day everyone .2 points
