Evening fellow NOPErs...3rd of July is look at yourself in the mirror and say something nice....I looked in the the mirror and said "NOPE" nicest thing I ever said to myself.... Early in my quit I would look in the mirror in the morning and say "not gunna smoke t'day" and then the last thing I'd do before bed was look in the mirra again an say "didn't smoke t'day". NOPE...with or without a mirror, for today, tomorrow, forever.6 points

Speaking of working out and being weird about numbers...I saw an article the other night where a guy suggested doing 4 sets of 7 reps. Seems straightforward enough except for...who the hell does seven reps? You can do a single. You can do a double. Three reps is a common number for power training. Five reps has become a standard for overall strength. Eight or ten rep sets are common if hypertrophy and/or muscular endurance is your goal. But nobody does 7 reps! Confession: I know that last paragraph I wrote serves no purpose whatsoever, but sometimes I get this shit in my head and just can't let go of it.5 points

Ok...I've been following your journey and haven't posted yet because others had said what needed saying. This may seem to come out of left field a bit but honestly a lot of this is reading like more of a cry for help around some other things that haven't been dealt with and because emotionally and psychologically these things are linked to smoking you are giving your nicotine addiction the power...you say Kylie took advantage...now look at the situation differently, if Kylie had been Kyle and he was 18 and you were 13... We would be viewing this differently....my kid is 13, and there is no way she is emotionally ready for a sexual relationship with a male or female... You whole life has been shaped by one night and one weekend. Often the stuff we go through as kids cause big scars on our psyche... I know I smoked, and took drugs and drank to fill the holes I carried...none of it ever helped. You are 23, I think besides quitting the best thing you can do for you is speak to someone about that weekend...because there are issues there preventing you from being the person you can be. Here's something to think about, 1 single thought process that really helps with the whole quit process... There are 3 things a smoker can be: Smoking; Quitting - still smoking but thinking about/planning to quit; or Quit - not smoking....You can be 1 hour quit or 17 years quit but once you have that last smoke you are quit, quitting is for those smokers who haven't quit yet.5 points

I think that as you gain confidence in your successful quit you will find that the skills used in quitting can be applied to other aspects in your life. For example, the notion of H.A.L.T. are you Hungry, Angry (which can be switched to emotional), Lonesome, Tired. To this day, I turn to this technique for a variety of reasons and situations. While it may not solve the underlying issue, it certainly alleviates compounding any distress by addressing these issues and I am better able to solve the problem if I am, at least, fed and well rested. Another example of using a quitting skill is deep breathing ! an excellent technique to calm myself and think more clearly. A conscious flow of Oxygen is a panacea, the handiest of magic elixirs ! Just knowing that we have the ability to change, and acknowledging the proof that we Have Changed, (we quit smoking!) gives us encouragement to change other things in our life. I know many of us have changed other aspects in our lives with 'quit smoking' skills. The self-confidence acquired in quitting, especially, encouraged me in any endeavor. What skills have you learned in quitting smoking and how have you applied them to your fabulous nicotine free life ?4 points

Have you tried working out? Works like a charm for me. It gives me a productive way to channel any anger and irritability I have and leaves me feeling relaxed and focused. The whole "think happy thoughts" thing never really worked for me; getting under the bar and moving some weight always does the trick though. I learned a lot about having empathy for people and their struggles. I am more kind towards people, a good transferable skill useful in many parts of my life. At the same time, I learned to recognize junkie thinking and reasons for it. Also a good transferable skill that can keep me from having empathy for someone who doesn't deserve it.3 points

Thank you @Sazerac I haven't picked up any new skills from quitting smoking. I can be patient if I think its necessary (although my patience is limited), so I applied my patience to taking things a day at a time for the quit smoking process. I used to deep breathe before, I don't anymore though, and that's because I don't need to use that tool anymore to get past a crave. Maybe I should use it as a tool to calm down when I get angry. Yeah, that's a good idea. I'll try that. Many thanks for getting me to thinking about this. Then again, my patience is limited to how much I can control my anger. What a conundrum.3 points

You have to Quit for yourself ...nobody else .... It's your body ...if you want to know the real damage of cigarettes ...read my posts ... Your young enough ,not to get a horrible illness.... Grab it with both hands .... Do it for you ...!!!!..your so worth it ... Read all you can here ...there is so much information to help you along ...3 points

Instead of taking expectorant, I would suggest plenty of juice (especially Cranberry) and water over the next three days. 3 days is all it takes for the Nicotine to get flushed out. Try to break yourself out of the mentality that this is going to be a non-smoking period. Think of it as ex-smoker freedom. Somehow, in the beginning, your friend has planted the thought that you are a smoker, and that's what set you on a path to smoking and other forms of drug abuse. I don't know how to put it. Here's what I can tell. People have their own way of getting their dopamine release. Some do it through drugs (legal or illegal), some do it through physical activity (my brother told me that there is something called the runner's high), some (like my mom) get their fix by having that cup of tea (or coffee). We are all with you, we all have been addicts, but that's no reason to succumb to junkie thinking and to taking a puff. It is probably difficult for you, but avoid thinking - "90-120 days over, I'm in that haze, now I need to smoke", try thinking - "90-120 days over, I'm not in that haze, time to up the ante on my exercise regimen" (since you like physical exercise). Maybe you could take up yoga with your girlfriend as well, go for the trek. Eat well. All the best!!!3 points

That brought back a memory from the very early days of my quit. Had a moment where I thought about stepping outside and taking a little pause for the cause. Got a bit frantic as I thought about how much I was going to miss that. Then I calmed down a bit and reminded myself that smoking is not a prerequisite for stepping outside for a moment. Oh yeah, people who don't smoke go outside too. I don't miss being a newbie, but it was a time when basic truths could feel like a revolutionary breakthrough.3 points
