There are very few guarantees for any of us in this life. I could get hit by a bus. I could be struck by lightning. I could choke on a piece of food. I probably won't and if I pass on positive things today because something bad could happen tomorrow, I will be left with nothing more than a missed opportunity and regrets. Take care of the things you can control. Deal with fate as it unfolds. Do yourself a favor and quit looking down the road for some magic moment. You used to smoke and now you've quit. You broke through barriers of doubt and fear and took on the challenge of quitting. You've already accomplished something great. Congratulate yourself. As for that time in the future when not smoking feels more normal than smoking used to...you will get there. We all did. Time perception is a funny thing. In the early days of a quit, time seems to drag on. Then, quite naturally, you will feel far removed from smoking and be surprised at how fast the months pass since your quit date. Absolutely. Positively. 100%. Worth it and then some. This process will reward you exponentially. And that's how it's done!3 points

Me too Doreen^^^^^^ brilliantly said boo.. Steely my wee granny quit when she was 75 and passed her 100th B'day I'm 4 months into my quit and honestly for the last month the puffs haven't bother me at all, sure I still get the odd crave but it's just a passing thought easy to dismiss infact I don't even think it's craves anymore it is more like a habit, like the other week I got a new job, I was so excited and there it was the wee voice in my head saying "oh that's fantastic news c'mon we'll go have a puff to celebrate" ( that was the first time I'd been that excited since I quit !! haha) because that's when I puffed the most when excited or stressed but I said "HELL NO, get to the back of the bus" and gone it was.. So remember this doesn't last forever, you can do this, stay strong2 points

Rather than wondering if one might be too old to quit, a better question might be, “Am I too old to NOT quit smoking?” The best thing about getting older is getting wiser and now that you’ve been around here long enough to know exactly what smoking REALLY is, you may come to realize that there’s no way you could go back to smoking- not after all you’ve learned. If that’s not (yet) the case, stick around a little longer, read some more, watch some more videos and hang onto that beautiful quit you’ve got going. You may start to think differently about what the REAL question is.2 points

NO! It's never too late to make improvements in your lifestyle. 69, 79, or 89, doesn't matter. My mother smoked for most of her life and quit when she was about 67. She is now 98 years old. I'm convinced she would not still be here had she not quit Most of us wish we had quit earlier than what we did and yes, there's no guarantee that we will recover completely after we quit a 40 or 50 year addiction like this. There are a lot of very long time smokers here on this site and we are all committed to making a positive difference in our future. What you are doing now is not adding to any damage you may have already done and that alone improves our chance for a better life as we get even older. You can not only add years onto your life but you will also improve the quality of life for the years you do have! That's the best we can do at this point but, it's still important!! The longer you are quit, the better you will feel and the more you will want to stay quit.2 points

Again, my thanks re my health anxiety. I guess as I've been smoker longer than I haven't been a smoker, started at 15 years of age! have a body that is now completely chemically adjusted to the reception of nicotine. Even thought it has BECOME me. It's going to take a long time and wonder whether I am too old to quit? I'm 69 years old. I could be dead by the time I wrap my head around this thing with any real feelings of comfort and acceptance. I ask if its worth it. Going to NOPE thread to commit for another day.2 points

Everyone is welcome here Abby and our one purpose is to be of whatever assistance we can be to fellow quitters. Sorry you are having some health issues but you know smoking will only add to those so just stay the course. Hopefully, you get better news tomorrow from the Dr. Please do check back and let us know. We do care about all the members of our family here and .... you're one of them1 point

You don't need to explain anything to me. I was just confused, which I am sure you can understand.1 point

Hi Abby Sorry about your health issues. I'm sure that accounts for a lot of your anxiety and opens the door to thoughts of smoking. For years, sometimes decades, we associated smoking as something that gave us comfort and calmness. Those thoughts become so entrenched in our brains that even years after quitting they can resurface if we let down our guard. Adverse situations can make us more vulnerable and susceptible to poor choices. But I'm sure you know that smoking won't bring you any positiveness. It will only make you feel worse. You're not alone in having deceitful thoughts creep in your head. All we can do is summon our rational, truthful brain to the forefront and acknowledge that smoking is a destructive killer and nothing good will come of it. Keep the quit!1 point

Your more likely to die sooner..if you continue to smoke... My hubby is the same age as you Steely...he has end stage Emphysema... He can spent 16 hours on a oxygen machine..in and out of hospital, tons of pills,..nursing care to tend to his personal needs... I'm slightly younger than you...just been on holiday to New York...7 hour flights ,walked the whole 7 days there..sightseeing... Enjoying good food, cocktails ,meeting great people .... I'm doing more now than I did twenty years ago...so to answer your question sweetheart whether your too old...no way...you'll love the new you..i promise...1 point

Wow, what a nice 1st post Wee Mee & welcome to our small but close and somewhat quirky family I hope you stick around and get to know us all. Congratulations on your almost 4 month quit - that's amazing Clearly you are already comfortable with your decision to have quit smoking and getting your life back. Helping others and even just communicating with others in the same position is also very helpful to us with our own quit. Look forward to seeing you around1 point
