Scary Story/Stories

Courtesy of my grandma, God rest her angelic soul ❤️ - here is the # 1 reason I gave not to quit smoking. I am dead serious.
This story is all her.

/////SCARY STORY #1:
Every major holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.) my grandparents would host dinner in their home; a huge feast ... I mean HUGE. And every year, and when I say every year, I mean every single year, every single holiday dinner, my grandmother (nani) - a nonsmoker of 30+ years would finish her meal, lean back in her chair, and say: "Boy, I sure could go for a cigarette right about now!"
I would ask her, "Nani, are you for real craving a smoke?" and she would tell me YES!
/////

Now, my rationale is this: if you can quit smoking for 30+ years and STILL crave a smoke after a meal then WTF is the point? Who wants to live like that? Certainly not me! I would rather go ahead and have the damn smoke!

/////SCARY STORY #2:
My mom smoked for about 30 years. Then when she turned 47, she needed heart bypass surgery. That's right, open heart surgery at the age of 47! The doctors told her if she didn't bother to quit smoking after the surgery, they might as well not bother even doing the surgery. So she quit cold turkey in the hospital/home.
Today, my mom is 65. That's 18 years quit.
Now she tells me at least once every six months that she wants to start smoking again. Arghh! I know she'll never smoke again ... but still, it upsets me when she says that to me!
/////

I could never understand why anyone would want to give up their smokes for so long and still want one so many years later! I mean really, really, crave one! 🤯
Obviously my thinking is a little different now, thanks very largely in part to the members of this board and Joel's videos.

As you can see in the picture, my nani was a hot mama in 1947 (I think that's the date)
I hope y'all like that I post pictures and it doesn't annoy you instead! Please let me know if it is annoying, I cross my heart & hope to die promise that I won't be upset if it is! Someone can just shoot me a message to my inbox, and that way I will know.

Your nana was a hot mamma! :) I love the pics you're posting mrsguest. Now as far as your nana and mom craving really, really bad? I don't think they were. Neither of them ever caved to them so I think that you may subconsciously be trying to give yourself a way out of quitting. It's normal to do that this early in your quit. And we're just going to have to realize that a smoking thought will pop in our head maybe for the rest of our lives. But it doesn't mean we have to act on it :)

I love your pictures and the best thing you are doing is staying on the forum.  I was addicted to the forum when I first quit.  I am still addicted to the forum and love watching quitters like you succeed.

I am so grateful to have quit, I have no urge to go back.  I was so ashamed of smoking and was so afraid of getting a smoking related illness.  I am a little over a year quit and feel that I have been given a second chance at life.  Maybe that thought will pop into my head sometime and I will just redirect that thought.

Don't let that thought lead you back to smoking.  You just completed hell week.  You are on your way!!!!!

I'm with Jillar on this one also.

Their thoughts were likely not craves, like the ones you may be in the grimy midst of.

Sometimes a smokey thought will waft through in a long term quit but, these are old memories and easily waved away.

I am not tempted by nicotine anymore in any way.

and as Jillar mentioned...the 'out' you may be thinking of is dangerous.

Check out Red Flags  (and add your own ! )

Protect your quit.  Guard it with your life, baby.

Oh !  Post all you can, mrs !  Your photos are grand.

The more you post, the more invested you will become in your quit

and the more you will help other people with your experiences.

Post as often as you want to and pics are worth 1,000 words so throw those in as well when ever you feel like it.

My mother is turning 99 in Nov. she smoked for a good chunk of her teens through to probably 30ish? She has admitted to me that a few times the thought of; "I should be having a cigarette now!" I think she's just more surprised that it still happens occasionally after all these years. She says it almost jokingly so I know it's not a strong craving to smoke or anything but just some vague, smokey image in her head that still rears up on occasion because despite the almost 60 years she's been quit, she's still a nicotine addict and always will be.

Although we can never become no longer addicted to nicotine, the beauty of quitting is that we can and do get out of perpetual withdrawal cycle, which is where we live each and every day that we are smokers. With time invested in our quits, it becomes effortless to remain quit. All that's required is mindfulness that we are still nicotine addicts and must act accordingly N.O.P.E. Putting that awful addiction into a deep sleep gives us a second chance at living life the way it was meant to be lived - free, healthy and a little richer in the wallet :)

Post what you want as often as you want....now cos you're knew and I've been awol you may not know that I had a big quit that I threw away years ago.....and then I have this quit, heading into 2 years ... This is what I know....

1. Big quit, I craved all day every day and spent over 6 years trying to find "an acceptable" reason to smoke....I never got passed the craving...but that's because I never stopped romancing the ciggies and giving them power.

2. I got educated about how nicotine addiction works.... But most importantly I stopped looking for justifications to smoke...and the cravings went away...not over night or in a few weeks but I don't get those cravings anymore, sure sometimes I'll get these whispered ghosts of a memory flicker through that hey wouldn't a smoke now be nice and immediately I laugh because nope I don't want one. I've got decades of programming to re-write but glitch by glitch it's getting there. Sure some day 30 years down the track a whisper might race across my mind and my gut response is Gunna be "yeah-NAH, I'm the one in control not some remnant nicotine receptor".

We must all post as much as possible because there's nothing worse than a tumbleweed forum. I've been on a couple (not quit ones) where you post something and if you're lucky you may get one or two replies after a few days. Yah boo to that, forums need to breathe (apt for this one) and be as lively as possible.
