Wise words.....'Embrace The Suck'

Soberjulie   Posted November 7, 2015    I dunno if Sarge still posts here but some of his no nonsense, shoot from the hip, tell it like it is words helped me immensely in my first days...weeks...months. The best: Embrace The Suck.   You'll have moments, many moments, where quitting just plain sucks. If you're anything like me, you'll think of throwing the towel in....because...."the way I feel sucks!"   Embrace the suck. Accept it.

A Relapse Prevention Plan: The Tools of Recovery

sharonsiff Quit Date: 12 June 2013   Posted January 12, 2015    I have added this video I found to Chyrs relapse post but I'll put it out here too. Explains the 3 stages of a relapse Emotional, Mental and Physical. This would have been a fabulous video for me during my first months and hopefully will be of use to others who may need it now.         Link to original post: https://www.quittrain.com/topic/4154-a-relapse-prevention-plan-the

Why being part of a Forum helps

JackiMac Quit Date: 1st November 2018   Posted February 9, 2015    I was sitting thinking today, that over the last year I have had two relapses, and this is my 3rd attempt in a year to quit, now I am seriously beginning to realise that way back last year I would not have even attempted to quit if it had not been for finding, joining and taking part in this Forum, being able to see that I am not alone, that there are different ways to quit, that not everyone's quit is th

The true nature of nicotine addiction

Aine Quit Date: 2-26-2014   Posted May 4, 2019    The Law of Addiction   Most quitting literature suggests that it normally takes multiple failed quitting attempts before the user self-discovers the key to success. What they fail to tell you is the lesson eventually learned, or that it can be learned and mastered during the very first try.   Successful recovery isn't about strength or weakness. It's about a mental disorder where by chance our dopamine

I reflect on the word "Struggle" . . .

Peter_is_in Quit Date: 11/22/2003   Posted January 26, 2019   For me personally and what I have seen, I reflect on the word "Struggle" . . .   To watch a loved one die from cancer while all you can see is the whites of their eyes. The pain and frustration only shows in the wrinkles of their face, because they cannot talk . .. that's a struggle.   That cannot be undone   To hear about a roadside bomb hitting a convoy of peace keepers in

Want To Quit Smoking? - Consider This

Markus Quit Date: 02-19-2008   Posted April 13, 2014    Want  to quit smoking?   Good. That takes some nerve and that alone is enough to get it done. You don't have to be smart, you just need to use the courage and will that you have, in the right way, and get that brain of yours aligned to make it happen. Just quit. Do it now. There, you just quit. It's that easy. Now you are craving a smoke of course.   It gets better, just as soon as you set your m

The Addiction is Real

Gus Quit Date: 3-17-21   Posted 1 hour ago -(edited)   Sorry to hear @Breath-of-Power. This addiction is real. It is powerful. I don’t know how much time you’ve spent reviewing the information about nicotine and the additives that cigarettes contain, but the stuff literally rewires your brain. Your brain. That organ that controls everything about you. After the nicotine withdrawal it’s what you will be fighting against. Of course it’s going to fight against reconditionin

addiction or habit ?

...   Posted July 22, 2014    Sometimes I do charity work for a homeless shelter. A really good friend of mine runs it and I help her out whenever she needs it. In the last 2 weeks, she has called me in twice. Seems she is getting an influx of abscesses from IV drug abuse. The first one I saw was from heroin abuse. 23 years old with a 4 year old little boy that she doesn't have custody of any more. The second one I saw last night. She has already lost one arm in an infection

notsmokinjo Quit Date: 28/11/2017   Posted March 3, 2020    I know there are a few threads already about the unexpected gains we got from quitting BUT I'm too lazy to go hunting, besides when ya do you tend to fall down a rabbit hole of rereading some bloody good posts...well I do..anywho ..was reading an old post and it got me thinking (no it did not hurt)...   Did quitting change who I am? Has it opened life opportunities that weren't there previously?

Owning Your Relapse

jillar Quit Date: May 29, 2016   Posted June 19, 2020    Over my four years of being on support forums I've seen a few people who just couldn't seem to get their sticky quit the first time. When they resurface it's usually with tail between their legs hoping for the same support they received before they relapsed. And with the excepti

Perception Shift

Boo Quit Date: March 9, 2016   Posted March 28, 2016    For much of the last couple of weeks, I hit a mental wall of sorts.  It wasn't that I was craving a cigarette so much as I was finding it difficult to identify myself as a nonsmoker.  Nagging, insecure thoughts were persistent.  I began to doubt if I was really done with smoking for good.  My policy to this point had been to "fight like hell."  What am I fighting?   The fight is with addiction of course, b

Spoiled Brats / Nicotine Addicts

Sazerac Quit Date: October 23, 2013, A Good Day to be Free.   Posted July 1, 2016    It was after quitting smoking, I realized  how addiction had turned me into a spoiled brat. I indulged myself completely,  I smoked anytime and anywhere possible. My most shameful example was after a home birth, my brand new daughter, alive and healthy, was being walked around by her father and I said to my midwifes, 'man,  after 9 months and the last 12 hours, I NEED A SMOK

The Lie

NADA   Posted January 10, 2019    I'm not sure if there are others out there who believe that smoking and lying go hand-in-hand, but I found myself lying to people throughout my life about whether I smoked, how much I smoked, and if it was effecting my health.  This is a post I wrote a few years ago.   Most of us smokers began our years or decades of addiction back when we were teens.  We learned to lie about smoking right from the very beginning.  Usually it starte

You don't just 'Get off the Quit Train....'

IamDoingIt   Posted July 15, 2014    I do not care who you are! You do not just 'Get off the Quit Train....'   You throw yourself head-first off a speeding train to land in the track bed below the train. You bounce down the railroad ties, bumping, flipping, twirling after the train.   A few of the train's car wheels run you over and you may stick to the steel wheel....spinning 'round and 'round as other riders in the car sit comfortably in their quit. To Not Smoke is Actually Easier....

Still winning Location: Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England Quit Date: 12th March 2014 Posted August 2, 2014    Hi Abby, I think if we don't understand it can be too daunting to quit. I, like many others, knew that times when we couldn't smoke were hard (train journey, plane, car etc). We were pretty desperate by the time we could smoke again.  That's because after 20 minutes or so, the nicotine in a cig starts to come out of your blood stream - it creates a lack wh

How can we replace the Crutch of Nicotine

JackiMac Posted October 17, 2014 · IP      Whenever a smoker feels down, depressed, lost, angry, bitter I could go on with the many emotions that we feel in life, but a smoker will always turn to that one thing "crutch" (excuse as we now know it to be) to make them feel better.  Yes Im talking about the nicotine fix, the cigarette, one cigarette will make everything better.  We all know that one thing that stops many people from finally quitting or attempting to quit is the l
